Early this summer my daughter found a cave salamander - we have really enjoyed her! Today, I noticed that her abdomen is loaded with eggs - I assume that she will deposit the eggs, but since we don't have a male, they won't be fertilized. This is my first amphibian - can anyone fill me in on the reproduction facts of salamanders?
thanks.
Are you sure she has eggs? If she's just fat, it could be for other reasons such as eating too much or an internal bacterial infection. I don't know much specifically about cave salamanders but most salamanders lay eggs in the late winter. They are signaled by increasing warmth, daylight, and rain. So, it doesn't seem to be the right time of year for egg laying (but that doesn't rule it out). Without a male, if she has eggs, she may be able to squirt them out but they may also be reabsorbed or sometimes animals become egg bound (the eggs rot and infection sets in). A vet might be able to help figure out what's going on. I'm sorry I don't know enough about salamanders.
