Title: Injured Koi...
Description: Jumped out like surface to air missle...

Aloha...

One of my kois just jumped out of the pond and landed on concrete... Actually, my father heard the commotion while he was outside.. He thought it was a cat, but instead found the koi flapping & bleeding on the ground... He put it back into the water and called me to check.. The koi seems to be fine, but we could see little blood trailing while it swam... Will the koi be okay or should we move it to a hospital tank/pond?

Its almost midnight here in Hawaii, so you might get this post late...
Mahalos in advance & have a nice day!!

Yikes! Scraping injuries may take a few days to show their full effect. They may appear bloody but may also grow bacteria or fungus. I suggest using pond salt if you're not already at 0.05% and adding some MelaFix to help heal the wounds. If the fish develops an infection, it's easier and cheaper to treat him/her in a quarantine pond with salt, antibiotics, and/or antifungal medications. I've had fish recover from pretty nasty wounds including a goldfish with a raccoon bite wound all the way around her mouth (and she was on land and appeared lifeless at first). I didn't do anything special (didn't think she'd survive), and she recovered.

Yikes is right! I hope he is ok! Maybe you could add a net to keep it from happening again. I know a net cover is kind of unsightly but I never take mine off. It keeps things out and keeps them in! Best wishes for a speedy fishy recovery. Let us know how you make out :)

Thanks, Robyn... :)

I checked him/her out earlier this morning in the pond and looks pretty normal... Swims fine as if nothing happened... I feed them and the injured koi ate normally... There seems to be no visible scratches when I netted and thoroughly checked for injuries... The place where the koi landed late last night was a few feet from the pond which is an above ground-type... My pond is about 2 feet above land, so the fish hit the ground pretty hard... Its a trip that he/she is still alive... I went ahead and transfered it to obeserve for a couple of days...

Again, thankyou & have a nice day!!

Thanks, KoiKrazy...

Im surely gonna use a net from now on... At first, I didnt want to because you cant really see the fishes.. However, after this incident, Im going to buyit... My dad suggested it, too...

Mahalo (Thankyou) & have a nice day!!

My pond is above the ground 2 feet also! I just use bird netting. The kind that people use to cover their trees to keep the birds off. It is very cheap and works good. It seems to be fairly strong too. I am glad to hear your fish is doing well, thank goodness your Dad found him in time :)

What would cause the fish to jump out of the water like that? I have seen fish in the rivers jump out of the water chasing bugs could that be why?
Is this common practice for Koi?

I have seen the koi in the clay pond jump like any normal fish in a lake. Mine also get jumping pretty good when they feed too. I think it is just a normal fish behaviour. When I trapped my big guy, he was jumping straight up 4 feet in the air and he was in 6 in of water and in a two foot round trap. That really shocked me! I wish I had the video camera running! I am a firm believer in keeping them in with a net! Last week when I was feeding my fish, one of the big guys came rushing up and hit a little guy and he went flying through the air! Thank goodness I had my winter shelter on!

Wow!!! The other kois I have didnt jump like the one I mentioned on my first post... I guess he/she was just freaked out or something by the other fishes... At feeding time, they often splash while surfacing... I always have to wipe the water off my glasses... LOL!!

Well, so far my "jumping koi" is doing fine... Its amazing that he looks okay and seems to be its normal self... Thanks for the helpful information...
