Title: Pleco Weird Or Normal Acting
Description: New to me

The big pleco that I fished out of my pond I put in the aquarium inside with several other fish and another smaller pleco. Well big daddy who is alot more social than the little one Big Daddy comes out all hours of the day to forage and eat which is nice and of course I love to watch him sail through the water. So while watching him I noticed on several different occasions that he gets down in the rocks(pebbles) and kinds scoots back while he holds himself up on his fins so his head is up but boootty is in the rocks for about 30 seconds or so to a minute. It almost as if it is a cat (yes I said cat) using the litter box. He wiggles backwards then finds a spot and stops for a few then moves on like he just did his doody minus covering the potty with the rocks it really looks like cat using the cat box
Anyone ever seen this b4 or maybe it is not a Big daddy and maybe a big mama??
Thanks Chris

Hum, I've never seen my plecos do that. It sounds like he's just trying to feel out the gravel and find a nice spot to rest or maybe dig up some food.
Common plecos rarely breed in captivity. I've never heard of a female pleco laying eggs without a male present. When they do breed, they use caves and wouldn't lay their eggs in a manner like what you saw.
So, I guess Big Daddy is just acting weird!

Common plecos are basically impossible to sex unless you are a rare person with a huge tank or pond who gets them to breed (and you see who lays the eggs in the pair). I've read claims that males have more hooked mouth barbels or sometimes longer ones. You'd need at least one of each sex of full grown (over a foot long) common plecos to even begin to compare those. Some species of plecos like bristlenose plecos are easy to sex but common plecos aren't.
