Great website, Joe. Great reading too I might add. I especially appreciated reading your honesty, as I haven't been one to spend a ton on Koi, to claim all the buzz words; Japan raised, mud pond, etc.
I've purchased fish for one thing only, to have a balanced eco-system.
Since then, yes I've grown attracted to them, and have always wondered what if anything I'm missing not buying expensive fish. One thing I can say for sure is, my $49 6" Koi sure have grown into beautiful fish, 18-22" to date, and are worth every bit of $400 per fish to me now.
I may be looking you up for one more. I'd like another one similar to your first photo, I think. My problem with buying babies is their changing color. My latest Koi purchase, this year, was a beautiful 6" pumpkin color Koi, neat color; in fact named him/her Pumpkin because of it. Shortly there after all the pumpkin color went away; essentially turned white. Now, because of it, I'm a little afraid to purchase another youngin for fear of the same thing happening again. I feed Terta-Pond Koi Vibrance, which is supposed to be a color enhancing food. Thinking about it now, maybe it is, maybe it enhanced the white instead of the pumpkin. Ha.
