Title: Huge Pickeral!!!

SadieMay - November 7, 2007 02:24 PM (GMT)
Good Grief!!! I decided, since more frost hit this morning, to pull out some stalks of my pickeral. It's totally outgrown it's large sized pot, to the point that I basically broke off 3 seperate rootings. I need to move this monster from the 18 inch depth to the 24 inch, any suggestions/opinions? Should I just shuffle it over or take it out and trim all the roots off the basket? The roots out the sides are at least 10-12 inches long!!! :o

Wow, that's a big pickerel! My yellow flag iris grow huge and perhaps the standard cattails and hardy canna but not much else. It's best to trim plants in the spring if you can just move the whole thing down to deeper water. If you repot or prune (divisions or roots) now, it may not give the plant enough time to recover for winter. On the other hand, it would get the monster under control, and hopefully, it would recover just fine. My iris get so bad that I have to take a saw and saw it in pieces, tossing out 90% of it. Plants can normally take losing at least half of their roots.

Talked to hubby tonight, I'll be leaving it in the shallow end. With 22+/- fish there'd be no room in the deep end. We'll take out chances with the top freezing and then prune out the dead stuff in the spring. I need to start planning a deeper pond...and bigger.

Ok, what am I missing here? I typed in a search for pickerel and got some results for a fish.

What gives?

As you found, there are fish called pickerel. There is also a pickerel frog (love them!).

SadieMay is referring to pickerel rush or pickerel weed or pickerel plant which is Pontederia cordata.

Pickeral is a mispelling of pickerel.
