Title: Turtle In A 5 Gal?

Kostic - November 12, 2007 05:48 PM (GMT)
I have now got all my fish in my 5 gal moved into my 55 gal. My wife has been wanting a turtle for some time but I obviously can't put a turtle in a cichlid tank. Anybody know of a breed of turtle that would be happy in a 5 gal?

NO TURTLES. Only a very baby turtle would be happy there, and it would only be happy for about a month. Turtles need at the least a 30 gallon tank, which is also pretty small. Also, turtles are illegal to sell in america if under 4 inches.

Animal Love is correct. There is no turtle that would be able to live in a 5 gallon tank. Baby turtles need at least 20 gallons. Adult turtles, depending on the species, need 40 to over 100 gallons. A 40 gallon breeder is good for smaller turtles while a 120 gallon tank or a fully enclosed outdoor pond is best for adult aquatic turtles of most species.

i'd have to agree. learning the hard way.

When i got my first turtle when i was 14, and we got a small turtle (me and my mom didnt know any better and the pet store person didnt tell us any different) I had him in a 2 1/2 gallon aquarium, which he then moved in a 10 gallon, then a 20 gallon, then a 50 gallon pond, now he is in a 100 gallon pond with another pond in development.

Dont get me wrong, i dont regret getting him, i am attached to that turtle as i would be to a dog or something, but i wish i woul dhave done everything right from the get go.

Now I have become the petstore guy and unofficially the resident (turtle guy) so i dont want people to get in over their head so when they come in i give them a realistic estimate of what they need to be spending to set up a proper habitat.
