Title: Pluggin Bathtub

timmyng - November 17, 2007 08:18 PM (GMT)
hi

i have an old bathtub, around 50 gallons, in my backyard.
it has a few feeder fish, and a turtle.

the bathtub has no metal fixtures on it left., as in the overflow, and the metal ring on the bottom drain.

so basically, ive been trying to plug it using a rubber tub stopper, but that leaks quite alot. ive put a folded cloth over the drainage hole, then put a rubber stopper, then put a heavy plant pot over it, and it still leaks...

how can i plug it, then be able to take the plug out every few weeks to clean?

thanks.

Hi Timmyng, Have you looked in the hardware store or feed/farm store for one of those stoppers that have a wingnut on the top that you screw down to stop to water from flowing out? I had a bathtub that I used for a water trough for my horses and that is what I did.

Btw, welcome to the board! :)

You could silicon in a section of PVC pipe with a valve opening attachment on it so you would just turn a valve to let some water out. It sounds like the leaking is due to the hole not seating right with the rubber stopper. If you didn't need to drain it, then just siliconing the stopper in would seal it.

Timmy get the rubber plug tlc mentioned. Its the best way do it. The only other way is to find a bulkhead that fit the hole and then get a plug for the bulkhead.

I agree, the wing-nut rubber plug is the best easiest fastest way to go.

I do like Robyns idea though. Without knowing the condition of the porcelan; if it's in good shape one could install a new tub drain (just like in the house) connect a ball valve outside the tub and have an easy access drain system.
