Does anyone know where I could buy pygmy seahorses or dwarf pufferfish? I have been looking everywhere for ages and I can't find any! I just bought a 30 gallon tank, and I would like to put either the seahorse or the pygmy puffer in. I have also been researching them for the past 6 months. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
oh yeahh I live in long lsland
AL, I don't know where you can buy them but I think that would be cool to have seahorses!
When I was in 4th grade my teacher had an aquarium with seahorses. I was totally amazed by them. It sounds funny but I thought they were magic. That was the first sea type aquarium that I had ever seen. They didn't last long though. :(
Good luck I hope you find some.
Thanks!
Also, if anyone has any tips on keeping dwarf seahorses (aka pygmy seahorses aka Hippocampus zosterae) it would be greatly appreciated. I am kind of confused, because most care pages say that 10 gallons would be to big! The food would be to hard to find & I would need at least 10 seahorses! What do you guys think?!
I did some research on the little seahorses a few years back which are sold all over the aquarium magazines (pick up an "Aquarium Fish" magazine and look in the back). I wanted some too. After reading about them, I realized how hard it is to keep them alive because they need minute live foods year round (which means a heated saltwater tank for the live brine shrimp as well as a tank for the seahorses), specific salinity requirements, etc. They are very hard to keep alive. I don't recall which web sites I visited then but I found these just now:
http://www.seahorse.org/http://www.seahorse.org/library/articles/dwarfKeeping.shtmlhttp://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site...s_zosterae.htmlA 10 gallon tank would absolutely not be too big! Larger saltwater tanks are much easier to take care of and maintain a constant salinity and good water chemistry. All animals want more room, not less. You just won't be able to find them as easily in a larger tank (good for them so they can hide!).
I thought 10 gallons sounded way to small! Some websites even said 6 in a 5 gallon tank! I was thinking maybe ten to 15 in a 30 gallon. I think the reason why they said not bigger then 10 gallons was something like the brine shrimp would have to be much higher concentrated because dwarf seahorses dont really "hunt" their food, they wait for it to pass them.
I dont really mind feeding&raising brine shrimp daily, and salinity, ph, ammonia, etc... are not a problem either. I have been researching them for the past few monthes, and have literally 30 pages of care on them, and I am really enthusiastic about them.
Anyway, I'll check out an aquarium magazine and hopefully I'll have the tank up and running within hopefully a year! (I take a long time to set up tanks!)
Thanks for all your help!
It's good that you take your time! If you get it set up, I hope you can take some photos to share with us.
