Title: Fall Pic Of My Pond

tlc - November 27, 2007 09:47 PM (GMT)
Nothing to brag about here but I thought I would post anyway. I planted some Spider plants (I think that's what they were called) on the outer edge of the pond that have died. They are the black things on the back side of the pond. I am hoping they will come back next year.
From the pic you can see the rim of the tub sticking up. I didn't mind b/c it is a water trough and on a farm so I thought it wasn't a big deal if it showed. It kinda fits in with the surroundings. ;)

Aaawww, Tia that is so sweeeeet! I love the red rock and the cute trees in the background. It is very colourful and pleasing to the eye. Nice job!

christina2lehner - November 28, 2007 02:44 AM (GMT)
I love it Tia and I love yout little frog spitter I have one just like it. Very good job!!!

tlc - November 28, 2007 04:33 AM (GMT)
I love that spitter too! The best part of having it is that it won't hop away! :D

I just threw the pond together. I didn't have a plan on paper just in my head. I can't believe that it turned out as well as it did but I did just throw it together ;) I am bowing now ha, ha, ha.

Hey Tia, Everyones still calling you Tia. Tooo funny......

Beautiful pond BTW. Nice job.

SadieMay - November 28, 2007 10:27 PM (GMT)
Your pond has alot of color, even with the dead spider plants. :D I gotta break down and get a spitter...I got a hose stuck between rocks and it's as ugly as it sounds. :(

wayne r - November 28, 2007 10:35 PM (GMT)
nice job tic. The backdrop of evergreens is great.

Pool Guy - December 15, 2007 06:17 PM (GMT)
I thought I'd try to post a picture using photobucket. (TIA if it works TLC!)

This pic was taken shortly after I finished mortaring in the rock work (Nov 06).
Afterwards I planted a few peterpans and daylillies around the edges.
Then I built a redwood bridge to lay across for some shape (and shade in the summer).
Later I added more rock around the waterfall and other areas.
It is 8' x 6' and is 3' deep.
My wife & I can see the fish from our bedroom sliding glass door.
I wish now that I had made the pond much, much bigger... never heard that one before
I'll see if I can find a current picture from this year.

Rich

Hey it worked!!!!

Thanks again tlc. Those detailed instructions you gave on how to use photobucket were great. I'd have been completely lost without them, and would have given up about a 1/4 through the process.

[SIZE=1]Sorry for pirating your topic for my picture test.

Pool Guy - December 15, 2007 06:46 PM (GMT)
Here's a family photo while they were in temporary quarters inside a 26 gallon aquarium.
user posted image
They only had to spend about 4 weeks inside before being introduced to their new home.

Here's a picture of what their old pond used to look like. It's was a small pre-formed pond (maybe 120 gal) that was here when we bought the house.

I dug the hole for the new pond in pretty much the same spot.

KoiKrazy - December 15, 2007 07:16 PM (GMT)
Wow, I love your pond!! That is the perfect size but then again I think I am the only person in the world that wishes they had a smaller pond! I really really like the rock work you did, it ties in so nicely with your patio. Way to go, great job!!

Pool Guy - December 15, 2007 07:36 PM (GMT)
Thanks KK!

You are probably right about being the only one in the world wishing for smaller than bigger. I can't fathom 500,000 galllons ... but 12,000 gallons YES!! :D

I keep looking around in my small yard envisioning a labarynth (sp?) of streams, pools, ponds, waterfalls, etc with no lawn to mow!!! Then my wife slaps me awake!

tlc - December 15, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)
Glad the instructions worked for you Pool Guy! I was being to wonder if you gave up! :)
You mortared around your pond? Another labor of love. Nice waterfall too! I have been thinking about adding something like that to mine. You did a real good job of hiding the liner. :) I like your new pond better than the old one. I think the poles took away some of the beauty IMO. What type of plants are on the right side of the pic?

Nice family photo. I see they all smiled for the camera!

Pool Guy - December 15, 2007 07:55 PM (GMT)
Thanks again TLC!!

The bamboo poles were for suspending the net I put over the top. But you're right, the poles were a liitle unsightly. The net was (and is) necessary to protect the colorful swimmers.
We were sad to lose Nemo and Charlie (the tuna) to a predator. So, up went the net.
I currently keep a net on the pond every day of the year. Now the net lays flat on the rock, anchored by more rocks. I also have one of those motion detector sprayer things that nails anything within 35 feet with a blast of water... me included, when I forget it's on!! :o

The plants to the right of the old pond are agapanthas.

They guys are a little camera shy.... they started to scram when the pre-flash started.

KoiKrazy - December 15, 2007 10:19 PM (GMT)
It kinda seems in a husband and wife combo that it usually just "one of us" that is the pond lover and the other one just tolarates it! I hear "NO" or "GET REAL" waaaay to often around here!!!

tlc - December 16, 2007 02:56 PM (GMT)
PG, what did you do with the old liner? From reading your post it looks like you built the new pond last year? What zone do you live in? I'm just curious about the type of winter you are experiencing. Winter is a big topic right now on the board [see of some of KK's posts and you will see why].

Don't forget to go to this thread and post, it will probably answer some of the pesky questions I asked: http://z2.invisionfree.com/Fishpondinfo/in...?showtopic=3429

Then you can go here and post if you want: http://z2.invisionfree.com/Fishpondinfo/in...?showtopic=2591

Pool Guy - December 16, 2007 04:11 PM (GMT)
TLC the old pond liner went to a friend of mine that lives in Santa Barbara, CA. He said he was going to start raising turtles again. That was a year ago, but he still has the liner standing up against the shed in his backyard. I think his wife isn't too impressed with the idea.
I live in hills behind Santa Barbara in the Santa Ynez valley. I'm not sure of the zone because this area has its own micro-climate. It's 28 deg F this morning here, but if I go over the pass and down to SB the temp is probably 40-something. The last couple of winters the coldest it got was 15 deg F. It's funny because I used to worry so much about how our fish were handling the cold during this time of year. Though some of the worry was justified because the old pond was only 18" deep. But now I see photos of ponds with snow & ice and I feel comfortable knowing that my fish will never experience the severe conditions that other fish have to up north, and out east. BTW, our pond water temp is mild 40 deg F. We are lucky to live here.

christina2lehner - December 16, 2007 09:37 PM (GMT)
PG Luv the new pond very clean lines very zen good job. How big is it now compared the old one. I like that size and how deep.

C2

Nevermind I just saw your earlier post I really like it. But of course I would junk it up a bit LOL I live in the country clean zen just is not in my lifestyle LOL. Mine is only 18 in deep and I live in Ohio yeah scared I will fishy pops this winter.

tlc - December 18, 2007 06:27 PM (GMT)
PG, So basically you recycled the liner to your buddy. :) From what I have read here about turtles they are little escape artists. ;) The turtle ppl say that have to have them contained or they will go traveling.

Pool Guy - December 19, 2007 03:03 AM (GMT)
tlc,
I hope my friend does decide to use the old liner. Maybe I shouldn't have been so quick to give it away. I'll have to tell him to give it back if he scraps his plans and wants to throw it in the trash. I've been eyeing a couple of red-eared-sliders that show up at the pond where I work. I was thinking that the old liner would work nice in my raised flower bed near the hot tub. I wonder how big the RES turtles get... they might need more room than a 120 gallon pond.
I think I'm just trying to come up with an excuse for another pond

C2,
Thank you. The pond has a little more junk around it now. After installing it, it hit me the same way... a bit too clean-lined. But, it was my first attempt at a pond. I wish I had visited more ponds in person to see that natural is more appealing. I'd like to show what it looks like now, but any current photos are still in my 35mm camera.
I do hope I get digital one for Christmas

christina2lehner - December 19, 2007 11:32 AM (GMT)
Oh PG we call that the "starter" pond Now you tear up the back yard and put in the marina LOL Oh i wish I would have looked further into it b4 I started but to be honest I did realize there is a bunch of crazy fishy people out there and that it consume you they way it did me. You dont realize the impact it has on you until you do it then you join the rest of the people on this message board LOL

SadieMay - December 19, 2007 11:59 AM (GMT)
They had a cute pond ( strange edging for it tho ) but PG, you GREATLY improved it. I like it better without the bridge :P , or I"d put it offside a bit. At least you can see your waterfall area, I can't...it's on the side of me. <_< Wanna trade?

KoiKrazy - December 19, 2007 05:27 PM (GMT)
I LIKE the bridge! The fish need the shade. I like it when people put the fishy's needs before there own. Plus I am sure he likes the view when his wife is sprawled on that bridge watching the fish :P !! Knowing men, it was probably the whole reason behind the bridge :o

SadieMay - December 19, 2007 05:37 PM (GMT)
Now KK, don't go getting me in trouble. I like the bridge too, but I'm just an offside person. I think sewing is the only thing I've had to do with things that were 'straight down the middle'. lol  :D

   I bet you are right K! I would wager that is the EXACT reason he built that bridge!! "Oh honey, I think I saw a small shark in the pond. You better go have a look through the cracks in the bridge." "Oh you can't see it you say??" "I know I saw one down there someplace, maybe you could look again later."  ;) That is something my dh would do.

I hope you can take a joke PoolGuy!

Robyn - December 19, 2007 09:18 PM (GMT)
Pool Guy, red-eared sliders can get pretty big, over a foot long for big adult females. A couple would do okay in a 120 gallon pond while young but you'd really need something bigger for adult turtles. Plus, in a pond that size, the turtles would eat basically any plants or animals that you add. I think C2 is right; you should fill your whole yard with ponds! :D

SHARKS!

<*)))>( . . . . .

KoiKrazy - December 20, 2007 04:49 AM (GMT)
LOL, awesome! See us girls really do know why you put the bridge there after all ;)

SadieMay - December 20, 2007 08:46 AM (GMT)
If that's the real reason, my DH won't ever make me a bridge. <_< Found an old woodcrafting mag in the basement. Gonna try talking him into making me a 'Bambi'. It's almost 3D!!! :D He is a TOTAL people person and working since he was 15, he has no clue what to do with himself since retiring. AARRGHHHH. Since I can't convince him to try cooking <_< then I'll try to get him into woodworking. Ponding is too much physical labor for him. :(

Thought I'd post a pic of the gang ....

PG, I see you have your pond decked out in x-mas lights! Very nice! All the kids are smiling and look happy and healthy!
Thanks for the pic and Merry Christmas!
tia

PG, you should post a pic of the pond with x-mas lights on this thread:
http://z2.invisionfree.com/Fishpondinfo/in...?showtopic=3555
We would love to see them. :)

Pool Guy - December 25, 2007 12:27 AM (GMT)
Merry Christmas tia,

Unfortunately the night photos did not turn out well. Way too dark & grainy, or much too bright & washed out. <_< I did see the cool night photos that you & C2 posted... mine were horrible.
Whether or not Santa brings me a digital camera, I'm gonna get one. I like the fact that bad pics can be culled without paying for developement.
35mm is for the birds
Although the drawback is that it's one more electronic device to figure out. Heck, I still don't know much about my cell phone .... just now figuring out this computer stuff.
I still have lots to learn

Yes, they do like to smile
They're probably wondering what they're getting for Christmas ... little do they know it's a 10% water change. They should like that, since it's been a few weeks. :D

PG

tlc - December 26, 2007 08:57 PM (GMT)
I got a new camera for Christmas so I did take a couple of pond pics. They are grainy too. I will have to practice up to get the hang of it. My dh saw the pics I took and said "more pictures of your pond????"
What else would I take pictures of anyway?? he, he, he
