Title: Baby Guppies :d
Chelsea - November 27, 2007 11:17 PM (GMT)
My guppy gave birth last week and now I've got a tank occupied by 16 baby guppies!! They are a week old (as of yesterday) and they're all eating and swimming well, but a few of them have developed brown spots on their fins. I just wanted to make sure it's just their colors developing and not something else...anybody else know what I'm talking about?

Chelsea, congrats! It's been a LONG time since I've had baby guppies. I'm not sure what spots you are referring to or if they are normal. They probably are. If you could take photos of them and post those, I could tell you more. I know I can't get photos of small fish myself though, just blurs.

Hello again! My baby guppies will be 3 weeks old tomorrow and it is IMPOSSIBLE to sex them. I've been on a bunch of different websites and most of them said the females' gravid spots would become visible at about 4 weeks. I've been watching closely but so far I've got nothing. I REALLY REALLY REALLY don't have room for another surprise pregnancy...I'll just barely be able to take care of the ones I've got. Any tips on sexing them before they become sexually active?
Here's a pic I took last week...I thought it was cute :D

They are really cute! Are they plain guppies or fancy? As for sexing them I really don't have a clue, srry.

It may be a while before you can easily sex them. The females most likely won't breed until the gravid spot is obvious. The males won't breed until they get their gonopodium and start to color up. So, you should have time to separate them in time. Sometimes, with guppies, a batch of babies will be all (or almost all) one sex like all boys or all girls so that's possible.

LOL, AnimalLove, I'm really not sure. The mother is fancy, but she was pregnant when I bought her so I have no idea what the father looked like. I have a brood of illegitimate babies ;) I'm hoping they'll turn out pretty! I've got a spare 10 gal at home and I'd like to keep a few of the prettiest males in it. *sigh* I've been looking for good homes for them, but I've gotten so attached to them...it'll be SO hard to let them go :(
