Title: Plant Rings?

newbie - September 20, 2004 07:52 PM (GMT)
Hi Robyn and all other ponders,
Our enjoyment of pond season is coming close to an end for this season(at least in Ohio). I was wondering if you had any info on your website anywhere about the plant rings that are used to keep plants like water hyacinth contained to a general area. I've been trying to find something like this on the web, but haven't had much luck. Not really sure what they are called. I'd like to buy some for next spring. Unfortunatly we don't really have any big pond supply stores close by.

Thanks
Newbie

Ive been trolling the internet looking for something else for my pond and I ran across some plans for something that used a big stryofoam ring that they floated in the water.

I'd imagine, depending on how cold it gets where you are, that you could probably float a ring in your pond and put the plants in the center of the ring and then cover it with clear plastic to make a mini-greenhouse.

I dont know if this would actually work - so dont come after me later - ha ha ha.

If you want the bottom of the floating plant ring to be protected from nibbling fish, here is a link to the floating plant holders that I have bought and used every year since 1997 to start my floaters in in the spring. Once they grow enough, I let them free (by then the fish lose interest).

If the bottom doesn't have to be netted, then you can just cut an old piece of garden hose, seal the ends together, tie a small rope to it, and attach it to the side of the pond. Mine holds water hyacinth in the spring but now, I use it as the only hyacinth-free zone to feed the fish (like a big feeding ring).
