Title: End Of Pond Year
Description: Best Moments

roj - November 30, 2007 07:41 PM (GMT)
The pond season has ended (at least for me in my area). So what is left is to look back at the enjoyment that was had with our ponds this year.

I already miss the times this past summer when I would come home from work, grap a paper or book and sit right up to the pond edge (as close as I can get and still have dry feet). I must admit, though, that I was not always able to get much reading done as my thoughts would wander from, "how to make that waterfall improvement" or "Did anybody feed the fish,...hey is that a snake?"

Wifey enjoys watching the birds splash in the pond shallows. She is a real bird fanatic. I deliberately extended a corner of the pond to create a shallow (2") pebbled shelf. I never liked house sparrows very much but the exuberence of these fledglings in water is something to see.

I regret only that I waited 20 years too long to get into it. But I'm there now! I really feel sorry for people that don't have ponds. We should form some sort of rescue committee for these poor people!

It would be interesting to hear about everyone's best pond moments this year. You know, the good stuff!

Roj, What a wonderful topic! I always enjoy these types of threads. It's nice to read all the positives from another ponder's perspective. I learn something new everytime no matter how silly the thread might be [not that this is a silly thread].

My excitement has come in the last couple of days. We have had a few sprinkles of snow here and I have been running out to check to see how the fish are reacting. My first thought was will the fish think the snow falling on the pond is food? Nope they were smarter than that!! The water temp is up some now so they are coming closer to the top but I imagine in the next few days they will retreat back to the bottom.

I do look forward to next spring and getting the plants going again but for now I am satisfied with the snow. What fun this ponding turned out to be!! :)

What, what, what.....

No beer, doobie, bare feet, anything! And you're feet are dry!!

We need to have a little talk my friend.....

I can't say I enjoyed the pond season much this year. Last year was better for me. This year I started with the new pond plans and then began the blood, sweat and tears of building the pond. I had the displeasure of pumping the big clay pond for days and days and days to drop the level to catch the fish to trasfer them. Only to discover the pond held thousands of babies. I pumped the level too low for the babies to survive winter and along with them couldn't get the last two larger goldfish out in time. Then came the algae problem in both ponds. Plus the dissatisfaction of not having anything eye pleasing around the pond this year at all.
Now I have the winter worries. I think this thread was supposed to be positive, so, I POSITIVELY look forward to next Spring when I can uncover my pond, plant some plants, build my pergola and waterfall and say HI to my fishy friends who I am praying come up from the depths healthy and happy and my biggest joy would be that my fish survived the winter in the clay pond so I can have 30,000 babies next year!

This past Summer was my first pond Summer and I enjoyed every minute (that I was'nt worrying) of it! Best moment? Discovering the magic of barley!

I love the birds too - but yesterday I counted 11 Blackbirds, 3 Goldfinches, and a Woodpecker, all bathing at the same time. It's like a bathing frenzy! I worry that the birds will lose their footing and drown... silly me!

Hi JB,

Beer and bare feet at pondside are the norm around here but you've got me with the doobie (?). Is that something that I should be drinking, eating or sticking in the pond. Am I missing out? You've got to help me here!

SadieMay - December 1, 2007 01:00 PM (GMT)
Last thing I heard called a doobie, it was smoked. And it's gotta be at least the 80's since I heard that term. rofl B) :ph43r:

SadieMay - December 1, 2007 01:04 PM (GMT)
I have a wooden/metal park bench at the tree next to my pond. If the weather's nice I still sit out there in the winter. I have enough land ( even in the suburbs ) to not be disturbed and just enjoy the zen. Maybe I can't see the fish, but I've got enough things going on for the winter season and the birds. :)

Lets see. There is the Doobie brothers but I don't think that they were called that because they smoked doobies. :)
I am thinking you are right about this one Sadiemay but from that bathtub pic he could have meant sitting in the tub listening to the Doobie brothers! ;)

The best memories of this pond season (since it is my first) was learning watching and realizing that ALL fish have personalities. Watching a simple pool of water turn into an eco system. I had a couple losses but the joy of the remaining 5 fish are amazing.

One of the highlights was finding this site and meeting all of you and all of the laughter I got from reading posts. Some of them I would beleive that a doobie was involved LMAO

Now all are tucked away for hopefully a safe winter and looking forward to spring

C2, I agree with you about learning about the personalities. My family was never a fish family so walking by an aquarium was nice but not interesting. The pond changed that. We've had dogs and cats, fish are more like dogs. :D

Johnnyboy - December 3, 2007 08:52 PM (GMT)
Roj, I'm ROFL.... (with you, not at you).

Yea, that's it, Doobie Bro's, that's what I meant. Should be playing through your landscape speakers.....

christina2lehner - December 4, 2007 05:46 PM (GMT)
After those pics JB we ALLLLL Know what you meant. LOL

C2

roj - December 4, 2007 08:18 PM (GMT)
OK JB,

What I have gathered from all of this is that it sounds like your best (pond) moments were to lie in a tub, barefootted, drinking a beer while listening to the Doobie Bros through your landscape sprekers.

Why didn't you just say so! LOL

christina2lehner - December 4, 2007 08:40 PM (GMT)
By the look of that pic I am pretty sure that was a Wine Cooler (ok sented candles and a wine cooler we might want to man that up a little bit) LMAO

Johnnyboy - December 5, 2007 05:15 PM (GMT)
Okay C2, you asked for it.

I'll stand up tall, I'll stick my non-hairy chest out far, I'll raise my arms up to the highest, I'll tightly squeeze my bottle of a** to really show off my might!... and then I'll shout out with all my power ......

"I'm man enough to drink what ever they give me, and I'm man enough to take the heat that comes because of it!; so Baby ... if you're willing, bring it on ..... "

How's that C2

hehe-he  :P

Hard to pick A moment. The pond was only finished last September, so this was our first summer. The nightly 7 p.m. robin bath complimented with a tall cool paralyzer was just the thing to put me to sleep, but it did make it hard to tear myself away long enough to cook supper but then a paralyzer has less calories than a hamburger anyway. I think the best part was coming home from work with temperatures in the 90's and heading for the pond, saying I'm only gonna 'tidy up' the algae and ending up swimming with the fishies only long enough to pick the last bit of string from the bottom.

SadieMay - December 26, 2007 04:15 PM (GMT)
Okayyyy....what's in that 'cool paralyzer'? Why am I thinking Long Island Ice Tea...I haven't had one of those in a long time?

KoiKrazy - December 26, 2007 04:17 PM (GMT)
AH HA!! I knew we had a mermaid in the group! Oh and by the way.....you make a paralyzer sound GOOD....and it is only 9am here, LOL lOl

OMG!!! Sadie, you have not lived until you have had a paralyzer!!!!
People do paralyzers different..here's my recipe:

Tall Glass (bigger the better cause they go down quick and it is a pain to go make another, I like to use a beer mug!!!)
some ice cubes
2 oz. Kahlua
1 oz. vodka
fill with milk to 1-2 inches from top of glass
splash some cola on top(about 2 oz.)
ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I use skim milk so I can drink more for the same calories ;-)

Coke BEFORE the milk, KK (thank god there's another Crazy Canuck in the bunch!) or it will curdle, even with skim milk.........and now that we're talking about them..........they're perfect for Boxing Day too!

SadieMay - December 26, 2007 10:42 PM (GMT)
I think 2 that south of the Northern border they're called white russians.
My diet 'drink' is an adult Shirley Temple. The kids version is coke with a splash of marachio cherry juice. And of course a few cherries. My adult version is a CC and diet coke (whiskey ) with the juice....smooth and sweet. :D

I was just talking to KK about Boxing Day. We don't have that day here in the US and that's to bad too. I thought Boxing Day was for boxing, you know like Pro fighters. I had no clue. Dumb American! I looked it up on Wikipedia and one of the descriptions was to give gifts to the less fortunate.
Boxing Day:
Boxing Day is a public holiday celebrated in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia and many other members of the Commonwealth of Nations on December 26, the day after Christmas Day.
Boxing Day is a traditional celebration, dating back to the Middle Ages, and consists of the practice of giving out gifts to employees, the poor, or to people in a lower social class. The name has numerous folk etymologies[3]; the Oxford English Dictionary attributes it to the Christmas box; the verb box meaning: "To give a Christmas-box (colloq.); whence boxing-day." Outside the Commonwealth, the day is celebrated with a different name.

One of the stories found there I thought was interesting was this: Boxing Day was the day when the wren, the king of birds, was captured and put in a box and introduced to each household in the village when he would be asked for a successful year and a good harvest.

Sorry to hijack this but I thought us Americans could use a little enlighting. :)
