Title: Watersnakes
Description: Watersnakes "caught" by fishermen.

Regarding the web item on the watersnake stealing the bluegill.

I routinely check reptiles on and along the roadsides (both alive and dead) for species identification. I recently stopped along the bank of one of the creeks not far from the Chesapeake Bay. A dead Northern watersnake was found in the road with no obvious damage except some blood around the mouth. When I moved it to the side of the road, I found some wet, fresh, minnow-sized baitfish in the same area. Possible scenario: this snake had been hooked by a local fisherman, de-hooked, then thrown to the bank. The small fish, not yet fully swallowed, may have exited the snake's gullet as it lay dead.

Any other ideas?

The fisherman may have hooked the snake and then tossed him. The fisherman may have just dropped the fish; they didn't necessarily come out of the snake. Although, the one he may have eaten on a baited line should have been around or in the snake.
