Title: Am I Crazy?
llgrennan - December 4, 2007 07:13 AM (GMT)
This is something I could only admit to other ponders... We had BIG rain today, allll day. I went out to check the pond & make sure it wasn't too full. Pond is fine, BUT I can only find 4 of my 5 fish. I spend the next 10 minutes or so circling the pond (around & around & around) trying to get a better look. It is pouring rain, I am now soaked, but still can only see 4 fish. I grab a flashlight from the house, and try again with no luck. Never say die - I hiked up to the shed, grabbed a scuba mask, and actually laid down in the ground and put my face in the pond!!! Ahhh, 5 fish!
(note: I was already wet, so what the heck. BUT, I swear, it is not something I would do again!)
Lori
PS-after posting this, I saw how the title was cut off and looked kinda creepy and came back to edit it, but couldn't...sorry! Is there a way to edit the title?

Welcome to the club: Thats to funny
You are in good company.Read the thread" You know your addicted to ponding when" under General comments and questions, in Notices. You might want to add one of your own.

That's okay Lori, we understand. :P
I love your persistance!!! ;)
Don't worry, takes time to build confidence. It's not unusual to not see all the fish. It's when you don't see one for a couple weeks that you need to worry.
After awhile you learn; all you do is make a quick search around/between the perimiter rocks making sure no one has been pushed out of the water, or pushed between rocks and can't get out. Happens mostly during mating season.
As such, I chuckle a bit watching first time ponders heading into winter soooo worried about their fishies, from not being able to see them.

LL, you crazy girl!
I laughed so hard I had tears!!
I wish you had pictures. ;) Then again maybe not, the bathroom is to far away!
KoiKrazy - December 4, 2007 05:07 PM (GMT)
WOW!!! Yup, you even topped me in the "nutbar" catagory!!!! But then again...I might have tried that too if I wasn't sure I would freeze to the ice instantly and become an Elainecicle! LOL I did get a great mental picture of you though!!!
Johnnyboy - December 4, 2007 05:19 PM (GMT)
KK, how do you know you'll stick to the ice immediately.
Did you try licking an ice tray too... ;) :P :D
christina2lehner - December 4, 2007 05:38 PM (GMT)
HEY KK
You found your underwater scubba diver LOL
The funniest part about that if I had a shed that had a scuba mask I would do the same thing LMAO I can so see you laying face down on the ground with your head in the pond OMG....maybe a scuba mask and a bendy straw for air you could stay a little longer.
You are all so funny and you did top KK on this one WOW.

Just call me "Queen Nutbar"... :D Hopefully, I won't hold the title for too long! I do have a snorkle...hmmmmm... this gives me new ideas

Queen Nutbar, what would you like the title to read? I can change it. I love nuts, especially cashews and peanuts!
I also figure on days that I'm tending the pond and already wet, why does it matter if I get more wet or dirty (I hit the shower right after)? My father was a certified scuba diver back in like 1960 but hasn't done it since the 70's so we have a mask. The problem is that the rubber is all dry rotted! I used to use it in the late 80's in the pool before it went totally bad. I also wear glasses so without them, I'm practically legally blind. I couldn't tell a fish from a rock.
I've gone months without seeing my fish (or at least specific ones) like this summer when water lettuce covered almost the entire pond. If I stayed by my pond until I got a full head count, well, I'd still be there right now!

Robyn, Maybe just change the title to "Am I crazy?" ...thanks! I used to SCUBA dive, and the mask & snorkle are fairly new. Too bad the pond isn't big enough to dive in! :D

I'll have you know JB, I haven't licked anything metal in the winter, since I was in Grade 2 and stuck my tongue on the chain link fence in the school yard at recess!!
SadieMay - December 5, 2007 01:58 AM (GMT)
At least you did the scuba diving on your own. ;) My DH was asking about the wire cage around the de-icer. Been putting it off for a few days now but finally put my hand/arm into 38F water and took hold. Came in, told him I was frozen to the bone...especially up to the elbow but I didn't get electrocuted or burnt. I'm just in a serious blue funk and really stupid/dense mood this week. :( I'm glad I can get a laugh from this board....off to find JB's pics again. :P :ph43r:

QN, you "used" to scuba? Used to? What happened?
I certified this year.
llgrennan - December 5, 2007 11:28 PM (GMT)
JB, I was certified in the 70s - lived on the coast, scuba'd from Salt Point south to Mexico (mostly in Carmel area). Also been diving in Hawaii, Taiwan, Florida. Married a non-diver a few years back. Haven't been diving since. Maybe this explains my need for a pond???

AND....................maybe your urge to put on your mask and get in there!!!!!!
Johnnyboy - December 6, 2007 06:24 PM (GMT)
Lori,
"Carmel", as in Carmel, CA? Carmel by the Sea! I have family there; we may have seen each other on the beach. But you wouldn't recognise me by my "Carma Miranda" outfit; I never had it with me. I used to love watching the guys/gals building their sand sculptures. Amazing eehh. :)
llgrennan - December 6, 2007 08:40 PM (GMT)
Yes, beautiful "Carmel by the Sea"! Mostly, Monastery Beach, named for the Monastery up the hill. This beach is known for it's big waves and strong surge - not for timid divers! It has the most beautiful kelp forests!!! I lived in San Francisco for a number of years, but now live waaaaay inland. I have hung up my fins for a pair of cowboy boots :D
Lori
Johnnyboy - December 6, 2007 09:15 PM (GMT)
Lori, now you have me curious; cowboy boots! I was born in Tracy, raised in the San Joaquin Valley; I may have been born in cowboy boots. Anywhere near?
llgrennan - December 7, 2007 05:04 PM (GMT)
Wow! JB, I grew up in Hayward (hate to admit it!) Lived in SF, NOW in Cottonwood - that is, 45 miles towards NOWHERE from Redding. Just north of lovely Red Bluff (ha!)
Small world :)

Wow! Small world is right. :)
Until I retire, I'm a visitor, but when I'm visiting I spend a lot of time in Durham. Not far from you. We have a few acres in Dobbins if you know where that is, just above Lake Collins. Plan on retireing there. Wife was born in Oraville, can you believe it. We'll be re-joining two of her brothers and her Dad up there.
