I have a sm 50 gal pond with 5ea, 4 inch gold fish. Do I need to continue to run my water pump thru the winter ? JAC central PA

For a pond that size, you can't really run the pump due to the ice. I suggest a small de-icer and/or air stone to keep a hole in the ice.

See http://www.fishpondinfo.com/winter.htm for more on winterizing.

Good luck!

daja, if your pump is self contained sitting on the bottom of the pond (I assume that's what you have), and if it pumps water to a waterfeature/waterfall, you should be able to disconnect the line from the pump, and keep it running if you want.

The best way is; if you can direct the water flow up from the pump toward the pond surface. That too will help keep a hole in the ice, while aerating the pond water. I've done that before when I've had to shut my main pump off.
