Title: Popped The Breaker!!!
SadieMay - December 7, 2007 05:28 PM (GMT)
:o Just got back from the pond, it was frozen over and the pump wasn't spitting. Right now just have the de-icer back on ( fish look okay), but no pump. And now hoping when hose froze that it didn't kill the pump!!! :( Not even sure what we ran in the house to cause the breaker to pop.

SM, Are you sure the pump didn't trip the breaker? Could the line/hose froze first; causing the breaker to trip?
How big of a pump is it (GPH)? Running a pump in freezing conditions requires a lot of GPH to keep water from freezing in the line.
How long after resetting the breaker did you realize the pump wasn't moving water?
If you're lucky, the pump has a safety circuit to protect it from overheating, or continually trying to turn when there's a jam. Without a safety circuit it may have burned up.
Since your line/hose is now frozen, chances are you'll have to wait until spring thaw before you can run it again.
Don't worry about the fishies. Keep a hole in the ice, they'll be fine.

Something in the house tripped the breaker? My big pond is on its own breaker. My small pond shares a breaker with the pool and chicken house. That one trips a lot, sometimes for no apparent reason. Faulty de-icers will trip breakers. Two winters, I had to run extension cords to that pond to run the air stone but that was because there were ants in the outlet (even in winter). My father's replaced that outlet at least three times! The ants walk into where the plug goes in and make their home.

I didn't get my electrical completed before winter as my electrician was busy with my Mom and Dad's new place and I have to get a new panel in the house to run what I need to for the pond :-( so it is a bigger job than he had time for before the snow hit. I am running my thermo pond and my aerator (which is a big one) just from an extension cord that is plugged into the house. I think if I also plug the allied in there that it might be too much for that one plug in?? I am hating this weather, I mean it is sunny everyday and beautiful, but it isn't warming up much over the -30 line, UGH

The 350gph pump is good, it's working now ( at least for the afternoon). The de-icer, even without the extension cord and out of water, tripped the gfic outlet. DH is working on it now, but I think it's kaput.

SM, glad the pump is working. I bet you feel a little better!
Those DH's you gotta love them for fixing things! :)

De-icers suck a lot of power. I once tried to put two de-icers in my 1800 gallon pond but it trips, too much load. De-icers (with other pond stuff) should be on their own circuit breakers. KK, you won't know if the Allied is too much unless you plug it in and everything on that breaker is running at the same time. If it's too much, it'll trip. It may not happen right away because things like de-icers may not be on all the time. Although, with -30 degrees C (or is it F, that would be even colder!), yours probably will be ON!
