Title: Water Hyacinth Dieing
Description: green to brown...

so...in a few posts below, i talked about getting a water hyacinth...

anyways, it flourished for a few weeks, until that bathtub A rusted a hole in the bottom, and water leaked out.

so, i moved to bathtub B. i cleaned it out, then filled it with water and a tiny bit of bleach.

then i rinsed it out. filled it, and transfeered my turtle and fishes; i dont deem the feeder fish anymore because the turtle doesnt feed on them..

the water hyacinth then became rotton for some reason, idk why...

some other forums said to dose them with miracle grow for a night, i tried that...

look at the pics...on the top left is the old setup, on the bottom left is the sparkling clean new one, on the right side is the new tub after a week with the dieing hyacinths.

The new tub looks to be in a different location. Appears shaded. You may need more sun; also the old tub more than likely had more nutrients in the water, as I can see other growth.

On the other hand, maybe consiquential with the end of season; no way could I grow hyacinth right now. I could freeze one though, hehe-he

Where do you live? What is the temperature of the water and air? Does the turtle try to eat the water hyacinth as to be expected? Water hyacinth need two main things - warmth and nutrients. If the day air temperature is below 75 degrees F, the hyacinth won't really grow; below 70 degrees F, and they'll start to suffer. As for nutrients, the turtle should provide a lot of waste but perhaps not enough. The water hyacinth may also need trace nutrients. You can add a little bit of clay dirt to the bottom of the tub (yes, that will make some mess) and/or add liquid pond plant fertilizer.

i live in hawaii, and its been raining alot with a gloomy overcast for the past week or more...
the temperature has also dropped from the usual 80 with lows in the mid 60's.

i thought the bloody plant was hardy! lol. thanks for your help.

ps, do you think those several hyacinths that spawned from the single one that are rotting away will ever recover?

yes, the new one is different, however it in fact recieves much more sunlight.tho there is a tree shading it for a good amount of day. it somtimes produces a sour orange...i dont want to cut it down :).

In Hawaii, water hyacinth should grow like a weed if the conditions are right! The pieces that are withering probably won't improve but hopefully they can make new growth off of the best pieces that you have will be greener and larger.
