Title: Frozen Disaster
Description: sunken heater
KoiKrazy - January 10, 2008 01:14 AM (GMT)
I am having a pond disaster. I went out today to do my usual pond check and my thermo pond heater was GONE!! I wish I never put the heater so close to the aerator (about 7 feet away)! Of course that beautiful big hole I chopped in the ice a couple weeks again has refroze and there is a new and even thicker "dome" over the aerator now. The air bubbles and turbulance from the aerator are "squishing" out the hole the heater has made, this causes the heater to rock and the water to splash over top of it. The water completely froze over top of the heater and it was so far under I couldn't see it. Luckily it didn't take too much to be able to get it loose. I tried to smash the dome over the the aerator but it is too thick and I didn't want to cause too much vibration for the fishies or fall in which is pretty doubtfull as the top layer of ice is over 6 inches thick and the new layer is probably double that. Stupid Winter! My husband is going to use the tiger torch tomorrow and we are going to try and melt enough ice further away from the aerator to move the thermo pond heater. This is really really stressing me out! You guys don't know how lucky you are to be able to see your fish!!

Don't worry Koi....I went to let the dog out last Friday morning and didn't hear my waterfall running.....something tripped the breaker shutting off my pond heater and the waterfall. Needless to say my pump is probably trash.....I just hope that everything i.e., underliner, skimmer box, etc, will be alright. The heater is now frozen into the ice and will not turn on as it keeps tripping the GFI breaker. I am really out of luck! Oh well, no sense in stressing out about it like I did for a day. Spring will come....I will get a new pump and the waterfall will be flowing again quite soon and a trip to Wal-Mart to buy some goldfish will be in the works.
Yours is fine....mine is a disaster!

Wow, that is a disaster for you! I hope everything will be okay for you and your pond. My biggest concern is that I have HUGE koi in there that I am very attached to
P.S. You'll have to put up a string of lights like some of us did so you'll know if your having power problems! I love just being able to glance at the pond and see that everything is still powered up. (still one great idea C2, I think you should get the inguenity (sp.?) award this year) ;)

KK! I would be having a panic attack for sure!! It would scare the wholly cr*p out of me. I worry if I don't see all my fish for a day[at the bottom of course]! So if you are able to "fish" out your heater you will move it away from the aerator but how far? Sounds like you are going to have to get your battle gear out!!
Fight the good fight and good luck. Let us know what happens!! :o
I think C2 deserves a gold star for that idea too. It's sure to save some fishies and other critters!

I'm sorry for the problems you are having KK and Bogey. It's been warm here instead of winter this year (70 degrees F two days ago) but my pond has had its share of problems in the past from freezing waterfalls and ice. Just because you can see the fish though doesn't mean you don't worry about them! I worry they will get too warm and hungry and then not get enough food (since I'm not feeding them) to carry them through to spring.

Bright spotlight shinning on you C2. Crowd standing and applauding loudly with tears in their eyes. Oscar music is playing for you to exit. Your speach is to long. Cane comes out, hooks your neck and pulls you off the stage. he, he, he, he...

Good Idea! I am going to search the net for other dumb people who thought it would be a good idea to have a pond when it is -20 to-30F for 5 months of the year! Must be another fruitloop out there somewhere!

KK........you don't have to search too far, I'm right here! Tiger torch sounds much more effective than the blow dryer I used last year while laying in a snowbank with a blanket over my head!
My Allied is still hanging in there, although the temp has been around +1 for a couple weeks everytime I put the Thermocube in the mix it freezes solid overnight. The power bill is hanging in around $200/month and I expect the power police to show up any day to see if I'm running a grow-op!
Temps are expected to tank after next week, down to -18 so keep your fingers crossed that the Allied continues to perform!
