tlc - January 22, 2008 09:47 PM (GMT)
This is a couple of pics of my pond this morning! The frog is kinda cool looking.
This is all new stuff to me and quite a surprise. I didn't know it was that cold last night. :) I hope the fishies have the heated blankets turned up!

I'm surprised the pump or line didn't freeze up. It's too cold! But, ice sculptures are neat to look at.

WW, you have a sharp eye indeed! Nothing passes you by!

Yes they are of the hardy, hardy, hardy variety. I had to pay extra but as you can see they are worth the price. ;)

You have got a very talented frog there, blowing ice rings. I have heard of blowing smoke rings but never ice rings. Send him to Canada in Feb. and he will have all sort of fun.

Hey T!! Love the frog pictures! VERY COOL!!! I am suprised the frog hasn't frozen up yet. Nice to see you FINALLY got some winter ;)

This is day three. The ice is much thicker but I think that is due to the water running out of the spitter on to the top of the ice. Yesterday evening my DH decided (while I was at the store) to break the ice into chucks. He was worried that the water would run on top of the ice and flow out of the pond and thought it might melt faster if the ice was in the water. SO.. he put his foot on top of the ice and pushed down breaking it into chucks. He told me this after I got home. It took all I had not to scream YOU DID WHAT?????????? What the H E DOUBLE TOOTHPICKS were you thinking?? Are out of your ever loving mind?????????? You have totally lost it man.. But.. I said out loud and calmly to him, oh you did? How did you do that? Why did you do that? Well I see. Now you have to be very careful to not hurt the fish. You can shock them you know. :) He says, well what do you think happens where you are out fishing in a boat? The boats drive over top of them and we see them swim by and they are just fine. I looked at him with a blank look trying not to strangle him! He said as he was breaking the ice with his foot he saw the fish swimming all over the place. Yea they were scared sh#tless I said to myself. All these chucks of ice falling into the water you dumb a--, I said to myself!! I keep envisioning him STOMPING on the ice. I have to remember he was trying to help and did have a point. I have to remember he was trying to help and did have a point. Repeat, repeat, repeat..

I would love to add my pictures, but it just looks like an 1100 gallon block of ice since my heater tripped the breaker a couple of weeks ago. I get depressed every time I look outside! How do you think my pond liner will handle the ice? She is pretty much frozen solid. It is about 23" deep in the center, tapering to the edges.....

Any feedback will be helpful. I am already anticipating having to replace the pump, but hope the liner will be alright.

KoiKrazy - January 24, 2008 06:58 PM (GMT)
I have the same concerns about my liner as it is some other material and not an actual pond liner. I hope it is okay. I think they should be okay. We are very cold here though so I don't know what will happen for sure. This winter is just a trial and error process for me. I have enough of the liner material left to replace the liner if I have too.

Tia, have you turned off your spitter yet? I can't believe how much ice you have.
As for your DH breaking the ice............................MEN! But isn't that sweeeeeet he took an interest and tried to help the fishy's out ;)

tlc - January 25, 2008 01:08 AM (GMT)
KK, no I didn't turn off the spitter but I know what you are getting at. I was worried to that it might overflow to and pump all the water out leaving the three Amigo's high and dry. :o I don't think they would be too happy with me over that one. What we did was to take some hot water in a pitcher out to the pond and pour over Mr Frog to melt some ice. We cleared a path in front of the frog so the water that he spits out will flow back into the pond un obstructed. I didn't want to put to much hot water in the pond so we made the path and called it good. Things are supposed to warm up (that means rain) here in a couple of days so I thought I would try to leave it on to see what happens. I keep a close eye on it and check it every two hours or so.

Yea I keep telling my self that the DH did have the fishy's safety at heart but I am keeping a close eye on him! :)

The spitter is still spitting and the pump is still pumping. :)

If you look real close you can see an orange "thing" in the center of the pond. :)

Isn't it amazing how snow can make everything just vanish! I see the frog's water jet but the frog is totally hidden. After a lot of snow on a really cold day in winter (not this year though), it's strange to go out to my pond and see no moving water at all. Once I move some snow, there it is flowing underneath.

tlc - January 28, 2008 11:43 PM (GMT)
Yea, this is a new experience for me. Ice, then snow. It was strange to go out to have a look and see all the snow on top of the water! We had temps at times down to 22 degrees Fahrenheit. Today the temp is at 40 degrees. What a change!

What I learned is you have to keep an eye on the spitter when you have ice. The spitter water will run on top of the ice after a period of time and could pump out the pond. I was home so I could watch it but if a person was going to be gone it would be advised to turn off the pump and leave the stone running. The ice did let me see how well the stones do work. It would do a good job without the pump running at all.

I think I saw some orange "things" in the very first photo also. Or is that my imagination?

tlc - January 29, 2008 05:17 PM (GMT)
PG, yep you are right there is some orange things in the first pic too. In the last pic there is an orange thing but since the pic has been down sized you probably can't see it.
Seems my fish are not camera shy at all. They go all Hollywood on me when I bring it out! B)
