Title: Minor Forum Changes
Description: Please read

Robyn - January 23, 2008 07:49 PM (GMT)
The last few days, there have been a lot of x-rated posts to the forum which I deleted. I went into the forum settings and wanted to set it up so that I would have to approve the first post of every new member (and then no approval) but I could NOT find that setting. If you are familiar with Invision Free Boards and know how to do it, please let me know. I did however find a few other things (that I didn't know about) while rooting around in there and made a few changes.

1. Members can delete their own posts (not topics but individual postings). We all have bad days when we wish we hadn't said something so now you can make it disappear if you chose.

2. Members can now add a photo to their profile of up to 50 KB. I put up a photo of me repotting a waterlily outside with my cat Gino inside.

3. Validating members (people who have joined but have not clicked on the e-mail verification) can NOT post to the forum in any way. I thought that was default but it was not. Banned members can also not post anywhere. Members can post in any area of the forum except this one (notices from me).

Anyone who posts SPAM or illegitimate things will have their membership immediately deleted. I've been lazy lately and just deleting their message. I have to delete their membership so they'd have to re-register to get in again. Hopefully, they don't have an unending supply of e-mails!

Will this work?

#2: Admin Validation
To turn on admin validation, toggle this option in Admin CP -> System Settings -> Security & Privacy -> "New registration email validation?" to "Admin Validation."

After you set that option, all new registrations must be approved by you. To manage admin-validated registrations, go to your Admin CP -> Users & Groups -> Manage Validating. From there, tick (or 'check') the boxes of the members you wish to approve or delete. Finally, choose the "Approve these Accounts" or "DELETE these accounts" option, depending on whether you wish to accept or deny the registrations. "None" is the default setting. and choosing this will disable member validation completely.

Robyn please remove anything above that isn't appropriate and thanks for making the change.

Robyn, can you tell me what you mean by "illegitimate things" or give an example of one?

Robyn - January 24, 2008 11:05 PM (GMT)
Illegitimate things include selling sexual supplies or content, cursing or being really nasty, selling things like jewelry and other things having nothing to do with the forum (I mean obvious SPAM, not someone on the group selling say their motorcycle). I know who the regulars are; you are at no risk of being deleted. If you did "go bad," I would notify you before deleting you.

TLC, I did see the e-mail versus administration approval but, unless I'm wrong, that means having the initial inquiry to join approved, not the initial posting. So, I wouldn't know if an e-mail were good or not. There are a lot of people who join but never post as well. I didn't want to have to deal with all of those. Since there aren't too many SPAM postings, I'll just stick with the current plan.

Well Robyn I guess you are on your own with this one. :)

And thanks for the clarifications.

Was noticing that the adult site spammers seem to target the aquarium category.
Can't figure that one out.
Is that because there might be more aquarists than ponders?

I don't know why they put the posts there most often. There is a lot more traffic in the pond section.
