Title: Goldfish Eating Babies???????

HI. Iv been trying for 2 months now to breed my 5 large goldfish and one of them looks like she has a larger belly than the others. I dont know if any of them has laid eggs and eatin them up before i could see them and get them out of tank. I got temperature at around 77 right now and they are very active spashing water out of tank threw openings in the lid for heaters etc. Im starting to think you have to sit there in front of tank for 24 hrs a day and watch and wait to see them lay eggs and scoop them up which as you know, who could ever do this.....Is there any way of keeping the adults from eating the eggs or at least minumize the eating of eggs if they have laid any at all in the spawing mops i have put in the 30 gallon tank? Should i vary water temperature up and down?? I havent seen any chasing yet but as soon as i go downstairs where they are they see me and bang against the glass for feeding time.. I even sneak up and peek around the corner and watch to see if they are chasing for a few minutes but iv never seen them in full chase mode like when they are in the pond in the summer outside.

Most goldfish spawning occurs at dawn so that narrows it down. I suggest only keeping a pair in a tank to reduce the chance of eggs being eaten. You could put the largest female in with one of the males (look for tubercles or white spots on the gills for the males). I would turn the temperature down. In ponds, goldfish spawn when it goes up in to the 60's degrees F. I suggest about 72 to 74 degrees F. If it's too warm, they are less interested and more apt to eat any eggs they might produce.

How big are these fish? Do they also go into the pond in warm months? If so, they are probably just waiting to go out there again!

FISH are about 5 to 8 inches long. They do go out and spawn in pond in summer/ im in northwestern ont canada. Iv seen the white spots on the gills on the ones in the pond when they spawn but i dont see any on the ones in this tank inside now. which is the problem , i dont know which are female and male or else i would just put one of each sex in the tank. I could have 5 males or 5 females. Roll the dice i guess lol. i will turn the temperature down to 73 as you say and see what happens. thanks :P B) :)

I bet the fish are just smart and know you're going to put them back in the pond one day. So, they are saving up their eggs!
