Title: What Other Fish Should I Add To The Tank?

 I have a 50 gallon tank. We have some Gummpies, 2 Mickey Mouse Platies and Zilla our Pleco. He's still little. I want a fairly peaceful tank, what other fish should I add to the tank?

Also my daughter fell in love with a Shark at the pet store. I don't remember what kind of shark he was, but he looked a lot like a catfish. He had long wiskers. He was really cute, not as cute as Zilla, but he was cute. Do you think he would do well with the other fish? When I think of sharks I just think of Jaws.

We wouldn't want any fighting. I already had to explain to my 2 1/2 year old why momma guppy ate the baby guppy righ in front of her.

Thank you.

Each aquarist has their favorite fish. I suggest going to the aquarium store and writing down the names of the fish that you like. Don't buy any yet. Then, research those fish and see if they are compatible with your fish. The guppies, platies, and pleco would do fine with many docile community fish such as most danios, white cloud mountain minnows, corydoras catfish, docile barbs, docile tetras, and so on. The guppies and platies like water a bit harder and with more salt then the pleco and the other fish that I mentioned.

The "shark" that your daughter saw was probably one of the catfish (since it had whiskers) and not the cyprinid "sharks."

It might be one of these species:

I don't really suggest any of the freshwater fish called "sharks" for community tanks with small fish because they all grow large and can eat smaller fish.

How did you explain why mommy guppy ate the baby?
