I am supposed to get a fish [shubunkin] from my neighbor this spring to add to my pond. I will need to quarantine it but for how long?
I thought I read someplace that it's like 30 days???
I will have to get an aquarium to put the fish in so how big should it be?
Last question I promise: can I take some of my pond water and put in the aquarium for the new fish??
tia
I put this in the wrong section didn't I.
An ideal quarantine is a month (30 days) or longer. I would say to quarantine at least two weeks. Most problems will show up by then.
How big the aquarium needs to be depends on how big the fish is.
You could use pond water in the aquarium but I suggest using all new water (well aerated with dechlorinator). Pond water will have algae spores, bacteria, and funguses in there that the new fish will eventually have to deal with but quarantine isn't the best time for that. Once the quarantine is over, gradually replacing the aquarium water with pond water is a good way to get him/her used to the water quality and chemistry of the pond.
I will move the post to the pond fish section.
Thanks for the info Robyn and for moving me! There were so many boxes! he, he.
tia, since the shubunkin is at your neighbor's house, isn't that quaratine enough? If it makes it until spring, and is still looking good, can't it just go from your neighbor's home to yours?
Not that you wouldn't want to get an aquarium ... they are great to have inside the home. Better than watching the news on TV! :)
