Title: What To Plant
dsep - January 31, 2008 07:09 PM (GMT)
Hi everyone
I am in the process of building my pond.I live in NY and the pond is about 6,000 gal.
I have 3 plant shelfs and one with 2 levels. What would you suggest for height and color? I want to add fish too. Remember i am a newbie and don't know too much, any help would be great.
Thanks javascript:emoticon(':)')

The answer to your question would be vast; and, unfortunately, I'm short on time at the moment. There are hundreds of aquatic plants to chose from and each person has their own favorites and ones that do best in their own setup. See my pond plant page at
http://www.fishpondinfo.com/plants/plant.htm to get started on learning about the various plants. I have lists of aquatic plants. I'm partial to iris but that's because they grow well, and the animals eat them less often!

Hi Dsep and welcome to the board! :)
I am new to ponding to so you aren't alone. I have a couple of lillies in mine, then I throw in some floaters. I tried some clover but I didn't like the way it spread or the look of the dead leaves so I took it out. My pond is much smaller than yours and I don't have any shelves so I am jealous of you!! I am going to try some Parrots Feather this year and see how that goes. You have got to see the Robyns Pond Showcase if you haven't already. There are some really cool ones and the people that have them post here. So you can get tips straight from the horse's mouth so to speak.
Here is a couple of links to the Showcase:

Wayne,
I went on to the Pond Showcase and your pond is just so beautiful. I had seen photos before on here somewhere, but I had forgotten just how beautiful it is. Your pergola is pretty too. Does it block much sun? My pond bakes in the sun in the summer.

Tia,
I have Parrots Feathers in my pond and they stayin my pond year around. I am in Zone 7 so I don't know what would happen where you live.....Is that your frozen pond I see on this site? The Parrots Feathers are so pretty and grow quite a bit in a summer. Good luck with them.

Yes Ellen the pergola helps to shade the pond.
It also gives the illusion when you are pond sitting that you are in a room.(a cozy place). Especially when the retractable awning is out, which is attached to it.

EllenR, Yep that is my pond! We had a cold stretch there for a few days. It's back to normal now. I even seen the fish at the top begging for food last week. WW said I could put them (Parrots Feather) in a container and hang it from the sides. I can't wait to get some and give it a try. :)
Doesn't WW's pond sitting area look inviting?

Yessiree, Wayne's sitting room looks inviting. Wish I was sitting there now!! Very Pretty. Tia, I am amazed at the ice on your pond. I have never seen anything like that. I live in TN, north of Memphis, Zone 7. Thanks for posting those pictures!! You too, Wayne.
