Wow!!

That ice has gotten much thicker!!
Looks as though your de-icer thing is doing its job. Or is that mostly open from chopping with the axe?

Can you see any fish through the hole?

I can't believe that I used to get nervous when a little ice started to form from my waterfall.

KoiKrazy - February 5, 2008 01:30 AM (GMT)
The de icer isn't doing much at this point. When I go out in the morning, the new ice is about 2 inches thick. The only thing the de icer does is to keep a small hole where I can begin to chop from. Most of the time the ice has grown over the de icer and I have to tap it to get the ice off the top of it so I can get it out, to get access to start chopping. That's how the de icer got a big hole in it, OOPS!

No, I can't see any fish at all. They would be about 6 feet down to the bottom now I guess. The ice is over 2 feet thick.

I know now that there is ZERO chance the fish survived in my other pond :-( it sickens me to think about that.

I too was worried when mine was frozen. After looking at her's it make you feel a little guilty. She probably has fantisies about having ice as thin as ours!

And down here we didn't even get any ice this year ... yet. I guess winter isn't over for a liitle bit longer. More so for the great white north neighbors!

Why don't my quotes look like everyone elses? :( I just started using them. I'm slowly starting to figure out this computer stuff.
I tried the Guided Mode, but that got me nowhere. I like pushing buttons ... must not be pushing the right one(s).
I think I need the help desk. Help!

Or.. are you clicking the reply button on the bottom of the forum thread, then clicking quote above where your type out your post????

Wow, that is some thick ice. I hope using the ax doesn't send shock waves to your koi. How deep is your pond again, 10 feet? You were lamenting it was too deep but with all that ice, it's a good thing!

Oh KK I think the fish are fine they are WAYYYYYY down there. I was thinking if you take the relative size of our ponds my 18 in yours 9 ft. I have gotten 2-3 inched of ice on mine with heaterthingy doing its job. And you got 2 ft of ice on yours isnt that kinda that same and my guys are still swimming and surviving. Trust me I am sure they are fine. If they were dead they would have surfaced quit making yoruself sick.

Unless.........They are only a few inches away from china if they kept digging they could be in china for the winter :ph43r: NINJA FISH

************Ok now I just read the post correctly well the other pond you never know some egg somewhere maybe ready to pop out in the spring mother nature is pretty awsome

Luv ya KK

Ya that would be great! I am so sad at the thought of all my babies freezing along with the bigger goldfish and the sarassa :-( I guess you never know, but the reality is, is that pond will be solid ice :-( Mother Nature's birth control maybe?
I will really have to decide if I want to stock it again or not?

Robyn: I HOPE, no I PRAY that I have never hit the ice hard enough to hurt the Koi. This has been such a learning experience for me and probably the fish!

I find myself going back and looking at this pic. It's almost shocking to look at (to me any way). I really can't believe she has been able to keep this hole open. Pretty strong willed. :)

I wonder what you would do different for next winter now that you are had some "quality time" ;) ice chopping KK?
You had talked about a fish house but I don't know what that is.

tia

KoiKrazy - February 6, 2008 07:31 PM (GMT)
A fish house, okay in my dreams, would be a seperate building, insulated and heated, with large sky lights, awesome lighting, a table and chairs, maybe a gas or wood burning fireplace for atmosphere (the fish love that you know ;-). I can TOTALLY picture it, I guess kind of like a little cottage with a fish pond in it! I salavitate over the idea, I think it would be the only sane way to have a pond here. My husband said last night "Ya, maybe it is not a good idea to have a pond up here" DUH, but where there is a will..................right? It will all depend on what I find in the Spring, to as what I will do differently next year.

PG, I had to pump my big pond in order to get my fish out to transfer them into the new pond this summer. There was only about 17" of water left in there and the pond diameter was about 20 feet x 40 feet when the snow came, so it is VERY unlikely I will see life in the Spring :-( If I get brave I will trudge out there and take a picture of it for you guys. KK

Oh, I see ... :(

A picture would be great, but seriously, you can wait for a nicer day!!

.... that is ... if you have nice days this time of year ... the sun has got to come out sometime ... right?

SadieMay - February 7, 2008 01:19 PM (GMT)
While you got the big hole I think you should go for the big watt stock tank/de-icer. We're going back into a deep freeze next week and the pond is growing algae on the plants and pump.

KoiKrazy - February 8, 2008 03:55 AM (GMT)
Hi Sadie! I want to put in the big heater but I am wondering if it would be too much with it and the aerator on the same plug in?????? My stupid house only has one outdoor plug in. I thought about running it from the shop, but I would need 200 feet of extension cord to do it. I have that, I just thought it might not be a great idea to have like 3 extension cords to run it????

Hi PG, We get tons of sun up here. Almost everyday it is beautiful and sunny, but it is always damn COLD!!! The sun does virtually nothing to warm this part of the earth. I hope we are done with our 3 days of snow!

I noticed a funny thing in the pond tent yesterday, I have been careful about keeping the snow off of it, but on the inside of the roof there was like 2 inches of furry ice. It was lots of fun scrapping that off and having it fill my boots and jacket full of ice, not to mention it filled the open ice hole too. It was at that moment that I knew for sure that I was obsessed with my fish. They better darn well be alive down there. Could you imagine if I worked this hard for 7 months for nothing???????????? Looney bin time!

Pool Guy - February 8, 2008 06:35 AM (GMT)
Hi KK, glad to hear you have lots of sun. I was imagining cold, clouds, & snow daily in order to keep ice that thick.

You are right. As much current as a heater pulls, combined with all the resistance of 200' of extension cord ... not good.

Keeping my fingers crossed for your fishes well being. With the tent you have and the ice hole kept open, they've got a fighting chance. They are lucky to have you there for them!! :) :)

Stay warm!!

I am just in from clearing off some ice and I decided to make the trek to the big pond. By the time I got back I was puffing so hard. I think I got anxiety from thinking I might freeze to death out there. Ha ha, silly to have to think that on your own property! Anyways here is the picture. I will try and dig up a picture of it in the summer so you can see the difference! Okay here is a picture of it on May first. It was about 24 feet deep at this time. When the spring dried up, it dropped to about 10 feet deep and then I pumped it out from there to catch the fish. We had no rain to speak of so the water level never came up and with all the dry wind in the fall it dropped even more. I noticed I accidentally left my fish trap down there, so will have to get it out before the Spring thaw.
