I have a pet chicken who is free range. She is sitting on her first nest and tonight was her first night on her 10 eggs. My question is-can I move the nest? I think I need to replace the blanket she is nesting in because it is wet and may need to move the chair she is on because there is a leak in the roof (of our porch) and it gets wet. I thought she was OK but now (bad timing on my part) I think I was wrong. I can move the nest very close to where it is now. She is semi-tame.
thanks
If she is really brooding, she will attack you if you try to touch her. At least, most hens do. If you can remove her from the nest, or better yet, go to the nest when she gets off of it for about 10 minutes a day, then you can move the nest. There is a chance she will the abandon the eggs but she may also accept the move. Things will go better if you move the nest when she's off of it. If the nest is wet, the eggs will never hatch anyway so it's a chance you may have to take.
Where do you live? What is the temperature there?
