Title: Spring Fever

ixii182 - February 14, 2008 02:21 PM (GMT)
It has been in the high 40's here for a week!!!! I've been checking the water temp in my pond every day and it has been consistently @ 52 F. Sooo... I have been feeding my fish a little this week!! Boy are they happy! :D I'm so excited for spring to get here but I know that the cold, nasty weather is not quite over yet. But for now, me and my fish are enjoying it! Thank you for the advice about feeding them Robyn. I'm new to this pond stuff and this is my first winter!

I'm sure the fish enjoy getting some food. When the water is in the 50's degrees F, only feed them a little bit once a day or even every 2 or 3 days. If the air temperature is expected to go below what it is now, especially any cold nights, be sure to stop feeding a few days before that happens if possible.

I'm not sure why your water would be 52 degrees F if the air temperature is in the 40's? Where do you live?

I live in Idaho. It has been in the upper 40's. This weekend supposed to get to 48-49 F. My pond is directly in the sun right now with all of the foliage around it leafless for winter. Maybe that is why the difference in temp? I bought a thermometer last week and have been keeping an eye on the temps in my pond and also in my 2 aquariums that I have in my house. The thermometer seems to be right. I have benn feeding a small amount every other day. It does get cold at night, though. Should I not be feeding them!?!

I live in Idaho.

Your not too far from me! Were neighbors almost!

It's been in the 50's here during the day and mid 30's at night the last few days. I have been tempted to feed but haven't. I figure that they have enough "stuff" in the pond to nibble on and then there is ALWAYS algae for them to chew on.

I think mine have eaten EVERY bit of algae in the pond (it's not overly big and right now it is overstocked!). My upper pond has some in it. I was thinking of knocking some over the waterfall so they had some more in their area. I don't know!?! I'm pretty new to the whole pond thing, I hope I don't kill my fish! You said we are practically neighbors, where do you live?

One state to the west. I live in Oregon.

Seems like you care about your fish. I think you will do OK now that you have found this forum. Everyone here is very helpful so ask away!

ixii82 (strange name, sounds like a robot :D ), I think it's probably still too cold to be feeding your fish just yet. I would reduce what you've been feeding. If the water is always (even overnight) above 50 degrees F, then it's ok to give them some food. Thermometers aren't always accurate. When I was incubating chicken eggs years ago, I put in three different thermometers and got three different readings! In that case, the wrong temperature by just a few degrees resulted in the embryos all dying.

ixii182-I am a Paramedic; ixii is Roman numerals for 911. I heard it years ago in a Disney cartoon, I was the only one in the theatre who got it and thought it was fuuny!!! Anyway, I have used it ever since  Thank you for the advice. I will stop feeding those guys- they are gonna be MAD at me!!! I hope I haven't done any damage. They seem to be fine right now, they are swimming actively and look good. I hope they stay that way!

I figured there had to be some interesting reason why you chose the name.

The fish won't be mad at you.
