Description: Astilbes
swampview - February 15, 2008 09:31 PM (GMT)
Hi
I know everybody wants plants in the pond but what about around the pond. There are so many ideas.Last year I bought Astilbes for the gardens and just loved them.I got a few pink ,white and red.Now is see you can get them in lavender.Wow I know I will get some of them. They are easy to grow and need little attention. If you do mass planting it is beautiful.
What have you got planted around you pond?

I like to use a mix of elephant ear and caladium in spots that don't receive much sun. It gives a tropical touch.

Hi Wayne
Your garden is so beautiful.Did you know we can now get ground clematis.I am looking forward to getting that for the edge of my pond and maybe the waterfall.I also have some of the seeds you sent me last year to plant again.
How has the snow been in your area this winter?I am having a hard enough time just keeping up with the snow and wood for the two woodstoves.
CAN'T WAIT FOR SPRING

Ground clematis, that would be great over your falls. I am sure my falls doesn't get enough sun for them. Thanks for getting me on to them last year. I had a vine 12ft high at the other end of the pergola in about 6 hr of sun. Didn't get a lot of flowers thou. I think maybe to much fertilizer.
The blue flowers I did get were beautiful.

I wish I could have lots of nice flowers but we have a herd of deer that eat most anything. I have cages on many of the plants. There are a few plants that they've mostly left alone. You can see them in my various photos. But, there's nothing "showcase-y" about our gardens!

Around my little pond I planted (but they are gone now) what I called Spider Plants. They looked like (and maybe were) the kind that you grow in your house. They did real well once they got going. I also put in an Alaskan fern. It hasn't really done very much, just kind of sits there. I also have some Iris that were planted last year that should take off. Around the Iris I planted some Pennywort. The Pennywort was supposed to grow in the pond but it didn't do to well so I stuck it in the ground to see what would happen. I liked it there so that is where I left it. I wanted to put some Hosta around the pond but I don't think they will do very well. It gets hot back there in the summer and lots of sun in the evenings. I like the idea of the Astilbes. I never thought about using those.
Maybe I can "steal" some ideas from WW's pics. ;)

Hi Guys
I am surprised that the few deer we have around here don't get into my gardens.I have been very lucky.I never thought of spider plants out in the garden,I will have to try that.I am always looking for plants that will grow into the pond that will flower all summer.

That's gorgeous landscaping Swamp! I didn't have time to do much with mine last year because of a late start on the pond construction (long story), so it was basically fall before I got the thing finished and it was to late to do much with plants, etc. So it basically looks like a big waterfilled hole in the ground at the moment! hahaha :D

Ohhhh Swampy, I am just soooo in love with your pond! I miss my old yard and our trees (and the warmer temps!!) Your pictures make me homesick for our old place. I have NO TREES now, well some, but you know what I mean. Our old property was all trees and bush and we made trails all through it and it was so nice!
Route3drummer - February 17, 2008 06:23 PM (GMT)
I love having lots of trees around...even though a few have fallen in storms and barely missed the parked cars, and one brushed the house just enough to take off an outside light. I still like having them though! :D

SV, I seen some of these before. Sometime last year??
Didn't you used to have the watering can at the top of the falls? You also had the hens and chicks planted in the cracks of the rocks. Is that right?
The hill that forms the top of your waterfall, was that already there or did you build it up? I can't remember.
I love your pond too! Thanks for pics!!

I think we should all pile into the RV parked by her pond and stay there for next winter! At least the ones from the snow climates up here in the north!! LOL
swampview - February 18, 2008 12:53 PM (GMT)
Hi Route3drummer
I was really hoping nobody would notice the RV.It is in way two many pictures and it's got to go.Back to the bush where it belongs.LOL

Very nice Swamp. :D I've got alot to do with my layout around the pond....oh plan, plan, plan. :( You've given me a few ideas. ;) :D
Route3drummer - February 18, 2008 01:30 PM (GMT)
hahaha...sorry about that, just couldn't help myself! :P
It doesn't change the fact though that your pond is absolutely gorgeous. I can only wish mine would look like that someday. And I agree with Sadie, I may have to steal a few ideas from you! :D

Hi tlc
Yes I did have a watering can at the top of the falls.I have changed the falls some many times. The hens and chicks are still in the cracks of the rocks and they will multiply every year. The fall is between the two large rocks that were already there. That's the problem I have with making the gardens, that whole area is one super large rock and every time I dig I hit rock.
Maybe I will just give the RV away to a good home because if any one wants to come and visit I have two cabins on the property they can stay in.It's a long winter in the north.LOL

Careful, you may end up with a winter guest!! LOL
I can't imagine leaving my own pond now though. Oh well, I'll just have to dream about nice weather instead of having it. :(

Your pond is sooo pretty, Swampview!! I am going to rearrange mine again.

Ha Ha could you imagine us all at Swampy's hanging out in the RV?? TOO FUNNY! I could just see us all loaded up going on a road trip from pond to pond. I think National Lampoon's could make a movie out of that one!!!! It would be really cool if we could all meet up one day for a "ponders convention" How does Las Vegas sound???? LOL LOL LOL

Hi Guys
Come on up.Lots of room in the cabins and lots of snow.

We can start the pond tour here and leave in the RV in the spring.LOL

You have a really beautiful spot there Swampy! Is it as secluded as it looks (hoping so, you never know what will happen with a bunch of crazy ponders there for the winter!! hahahaha). :D :D
tlc - February 19, 2008 02:58 AM (GMT)
Yea SV I thought that was yours.
Your place looks down right peaceful. I looked at the pics on your blogspot too and they are great!
The ones above are well, just breath taking. I love snow pics! And the blue sky goes well with the snow.
Do you take care of the cablins yourself?
tia
swampview - February 19, 2008 03:10 PM (GMT)
Hi tlc
My place is very peaceful. Before we built the house we use to come here and camp in the cabins on weekends. The large cabin sleeps 4 people and has all the comforts of home as far as camping goes.It is heated and has a fridge ,stove and all the dishes. All you have to do is bring food. The small cabin sleeps 4 and it is just used for sleeping. When we built the house my husband and I lived in the large cabin for 5 mths. The cabin is only 16x16 and we survived it no problem. Most husband and wifes would kill each other in that small a space for that length of time(24 7 ).The property is surrounded with wetlands on the back and one side.On the other side is all bush.At the front of the house is a country road.I do have a couple of houses but not very close to me like in the city. One thing about my property is that there will never be any more building around me.Nice I like that idea.
I do take care of the cabins but it isn't much work.I have rented them out for weekends to people and also when the kids come with their families they can stay in the cabins instead of the house.Another great use for them.

Your garden is beautiful. I too used elephant ears, banana plant, caladiums, some coral bells, and canna. Those that were not hardy I dug up to try and save for this year. My caladiums I overwintered inside and a few in pond plants that I wasn't sure if they were hardy. I also had perennial sunflower, nearby and clematis, mountain laurel and goldsturm coneflower. I would like to make thing even more lush like yours this year. We sre planning a patio in the pond area because things are very uneven in that area. I'am not going to install the patio right up to the front of the pond, I would like to add lots of low growing plants around the front this year. Cheryl
Route3drummer - March 21, 2008 06:14 PM (GMT)
Sounds nice Cheryl, you will have to supply some pictures when you can! We are basically a bunch of pond voyeurs!! :P
Swampy sold her RV??!! :( .....guess I'll just have to sleep on her front lawn then! :D
