Title: Help Needed To Identify My Snails

keszi - February 16, 2008 07:06 PM (GMT)
Hi everyone!

I just bought two new snails, and I don't know what species they are...
(They couldn't tell me in the shop.)

They have dark brown, longish shells with black dots. Now they are almost 2cm long, but I was told that they will become as big as apple snails. They also have "doors" on their shells, like apple snails do.

Are they some kind of apple snails?!
If I have time, I will take some photos of them.
Thanks for helping!

I would be totally guessing without a photo. If they're apple snails, I'm not very good at telling those apart so I suggest applesnail.net for that.

Hi!

Finally I found some snails on the net, that look similar to the ones I have. :D
They called "neritina". I think the neritina is a "family name", there are a lot of different species. They have the same shape, but various colours.
I found this photo on the net. This is the colour and pattern of the ones I have:

:D
I love them too. They eat a lot of algae :)

I have found a lot of photos on the net (now I know, what to search for :D )
The only problem seems to be that they don't really like to breed. I couldn't decide whether they freshwater or salt water snails. I have read that they live in both, but breed only in saltwater. Others say, that their snails lay eggs, but these eggs do not hatch:(

They are very beautiful. I don't think I've seen snails like that before. I wish I knew more about them.

This is the link, where I have found some information of the "neritina natalensis". It is also called "zebra nerite" or "zebra snail".
