Title: Winter Pics

Tiia - February 17, 2008 04:19 PM (GMT)
We have had more than our share of snow this year. Being in Canada, most would think we would be used to this.. ha ha.... but that's not the case. I went out the other night to check on the pond & this is all I found. I ended up shoveling some of the snow off too.... It is now raining, so I am hoping that this will help melt some of the surrounding ice... I don't want to break it as it will startle the fish. I have noticed with the ice freezing, there has been quite a bit of string alge just under the ice.

Great Pictures! What Province are you in?

Tiia - February 17, 2008 07:58 PM (GMT)
I'm in Cambrige, Ontario. Today has been nothing but rain. The morning was freezing rain but it's just pouring. Hopefully it will melt some of this snow.

New Brunswick is supposed to get the freezing rain tonight and rain tomorrow. Messy.

Route3drummer - February 19, 2008 09:29 PM (GMT)
Woot!

All the rain and warm temps cleared the snow and ice off the top of my pond. I was watching one of my little guys cruise around. Dang, I want spring!!

Well yesterday we had 'the great thaw'.... but then it started AGAIN and it's started to freeze over again.... I've had enough of this winter already... I'm looking forward to seeing that humidex again...bring on the heat wave's..

Here is a pic of the thaw and another of the snow starting again..

It's come a long way in the last two days... ha ha

How's it going in N.B? I have family in Nova Scotia.

Hi, Bill. Your lanterns make your pond snow scene very interesting. I see you have pond netting like I do. Do you have predator problems too?

tlc - February 22, 2008 10:36 PM (GMT)
Hi Bill, I like your puddle!! Where did you get the lanterns they are so cute!
Thanks for sharing the pics!

Tiia, I somehow missed these pics.
Nice winter pics. I hope your fish are all huddled up keeping warm! Looks like you have had quite a bit of snow there.

Where is Cambrige Ontario from the US boarder?

Hi Tia

I am about an hour or so from the Buffalo NY border.

The fish are tucked down nicely. Once the ice thaws again, I will have a better look to see how they are doing. There are about 50 or so fish in there.

Hi neighbor Tiia. I live in Jordan.

I like the fact that you built the pond close to the deck so you can look down on it.

How did you keep that much open water with these cold temps?

FYI : she goes by tic. tic will explain. It a long story.ha ha

I have a submersible sump pump that is always running. In the summer I hook the pump up to a hose leading to the bio filter. In the winter I unhook it & just let it run free. It keeps the water moving therefore preventing it from freezing (well most of it  ). We have had a colder winter this year so I've had to keep my eye on it. It won't freeze right over. In the spring when the fish come too, it's priceless as I have actually seen the fish line up and take turns swimming in to the flow of water that comes out of the pump and it pushes them for a fun ride. I could not believe it, but these fish have personality plus... :D :D

BTW, you get the 'lake effect' snow in Jordan???

Fortunately we miss most lake effect snow. They get it to the east and west of us.

We requested not to get it :)

Hi tiia, your pond looks pretty cool! Do you have any summer pictures that I could see of it?????

Route3drummer - February 29, 2008 12:35 PM (GMT)
Brrr......minus 28 degrees Celsius last night. But it was so calm it almost tricked you into forgetting how cold it was! Tore down my kit after a gig and was carrying a drum out to the car by the metal rim, and of course someone stopped me to talk for a minute, and by the time I got to the car to put the drum in my hand was starting to freeze to the drum! LOL

Poor fishies...I envision chipping them out of a solid block of ice in a months time. I'm sure they will have very surprised looks on their faces!

On the bright side, it is supposed to warm up to minus 10 on the weekend....and snow over a foot...... <_<

The bio filter is tucked away to the far right (not in the pic). The stream leading to the waterfall is about 14 feet. It runs along the top... The pond is located to the left of the photo...

Very nice Tiia. It has a very natural look to it. I would have thought it too shady for the lillies, but they seem to be blooming just fine!

Tiia, what is it that is used for the edging of the pond? It looks different than what I've seen in other ponds. It kind of looks like wood.

KoiKrazy - March 2, 2008 11:54 PM (GMT)
Hi Tiia, thaks for posting the pictures! What beautiful greenery you have! Very nice. I am jealous that I can't have that at my house, lol :-( I think we all can't wait for Spring to finally get here!

tlc - March 3, 2008 06:12 PM (GMT)
Tiia,
Looks like you are doing something right. All the plants look very healthy.
Is that Parrot Feather just floating in your pond?
In the last pic, are we viewing the area where the waterfall starts?

Very nice thanks for sharing.

Tia

Tiia - March 3, 2008 10:47 PM (GMT)
Hi...

Yes the edging is wood. I can't take any credit for the design as the pond was already there when I bought the house. My strengths have been maintaining & learning about ponds.

The stuff floating is horns wort (spelling ??). It does look a lot like parrots feather.
And yes in the last photo, the filter is too the right of the photo. Once the weather improves, I will post some pics of the actual set up.

The temperature has finally started to rise, a lot of ice & snow is melting. This afternoon I went to try to pull some of the string algae out & noticed one of my bigger koi had managed to get tangled. I don't know how long the fish had been like that but I managed to get the fish loose, she/he floated up a bit and I gave her/him a nudge and the tail wiggled and disapeared. I hope the fish is ok.... I'm hoping the rest of the fish are ok.. I have not been able to see them as they are tucked down in the snow covered portion. I have a variety of them and I'm guessing there are over 50 fish in there.

Tiia

If the fish are getting tangled in the hair algae, then you know there's too much of it. I think the hornwort can also make swimming around difficult when there's a lot of it. It's the only submerged plant that does well in my smaller ponds (none live in my big pond since the fish eat them).
