:D I have a couple of questions; the first one is I have three aquariums; one
of them is set up for guppies only. I have a adult female and male fancy
guppies and several other smaller one who are mixed. Anyway, my question
is, this female guppy is quite pregnant and has been so for going on two
months.why doesn't she have her babies?
My second question is this; I have a beautiful male Paradise fish (which by
the way I have trained to jump at my finger to get food) and I also have
three male gouramies, two in one tank and the paradise and the other one in
another tank. I have searched high and low on the internet and at all the
pet stores locally but cannot find a FEMALE Paradise fish or a FEMALE
gourami. If you can help me with this it would be really appreciated.
Thank you.
A female guppy will have her babies within a few months from when the babies start to develop. If it's been longer than that, there may be a problem. She may not even have babies or perhaps they're not as far along as you think. Certain problems like dropsy, kidney malfuction, internal bacterial infections, etc. may make a fish look like she is carrying young when she may not be. Can you see the dark black babies near her vent? There is almost always a dark patch, gravid spot, near there in mature females but when there are a lot of babies, you can see them ready to come out.
I've had a few people ask about finding female paradise fish or other gouramis. I've never had that problem. My local stores seem to stock about 50/50 sex ratios. With gouramis like dwarf gouramis that are easy to sex, it's common to find tanks sold that are all male. Since paradise fish and most gouramis are hard to sex to the average person, they are not usually separated by sex. So, I've been a bit confused as to why people are finding tanks of males only. I've had trouble myself sexing adult paradise fish so, in some cases, I think people are simply mis-sexing their fish. If you want to be sure to get a female paradise fish or other gourami, your best bet is to join your local aquarium club and/or find someone who keeps or breeds them. I highly doubt the average aquarium store clerk can sex paradise fish. Anyway, I'm confounded myself.
Good luck with your fish!
I have had the same problem with finding female dwarf gouramis myself...
