Ok so about 10 days ago I notice that one of my apple snails crawled right out of its shell. It's 10 days later and it doesn't appear to be growing a new one. It is alive and kicking, moving around and what not. I can eve see its heart beating? Why did it leave its shell?
Can you get a photo of this? I've had a few people say that snails have come out of their shells. The problem is, just as with turtles, a snail is attached to its shell. It is part of the snail. If a snail is physically ripped or broken from its shell, it may live a short time (a few days) but cannot regrow its shell or survive long term. A snail cannot willingly come out of its shell anymore than you can willingly come out of your skin. I've only seen a snail out of the shell in my tanks when a small snail has a severly damaged shell that was crushed; they usually still drag what remains of the shell. So, I am skeptical of the snails I've heard of that are living without a shell. The snail cannot reattach itself to the original shell or grow a new one to any degree. Sorry. How big was this apple snail?
