Title: Swaping Tanks
Description: NEED HELP
christina2lehner - March 20, 2008 02:25 AM (GMT)
Ok I have my 55 gal hex tank that is established well I found a heck of a deal on a 130 Gal WONDERFUL tank ful set up for $200.00 bucks and trade him my hex found on craigs list (wonderful site) had an answere within 30 min I just posted a WANTED ad and what I was willing to pay pretty cool. Anyways i need to know what is the best way to do this. The guy is letting me keep my hex until monday in order to set up the new one (which is very nice) so I dont have to bucket the fish and gives me 4 days to switch them over. I would like to keep my water in order to get the good stuf and I am keeping all my gravel and filter I do not want to stress the fish (or myself) in this ordeal what do I need to do.
Also the ONLY bad thing about the new tank is that I have to get a lid where is the best place to do that cheap 6 footer pic of new tank below (no fish though)

I pick up tomorrow please let me know what you think

Wow, that's a big and long tank! Due to the size of the hood, I suggest picking one up at the local aquarium store. If you mail order, it could become broken or cost too much to ship. I prefer glass lids myself. I'm guessing the big tank has two braces, two feet apart from each other? So, the lid may be in three sections?
Is that the actual tank? It's weird that there's a TV mounted above it? I would suggest having two filters like that one; one isn't enough.
To set up the tank, first catch and move your fish to temporary quarters. I've used emptied and cleaned plastic cat litter buckets, regular buckets, and Sterilite storage containers for similar moves. Cover the tops to prevent fish jumping. Fill them half way with tank water and then add the fish, keeping large ones in separate containers from small ones and so on. Then, you have a few hours where the fish should be fine to tear down and set up the new tank. Take out everything. Rinse the gravel many times until it runs clear. Then, it's just like setting up a new tank just with used things. You'll probably need lots more gravel, more filtration, and so on. Once it's all set up, wait until the water is pretty close to what the fish are already in and aerate the water really well. Even if you move most of the old water, it's still at least a 50% water change you'll be Effectively doing. If you "change" more than that, aeration becomes very important but up to 50%, the fish don't have to wait to go in to the new tank. The reason is due to compressed gases in the water.

yes that was the tank the seller took that pic 150 gallons (I thought 130)
It is up and running I was able to get everyone in but almost tragic. The tetra was real hard to catch and I stressed him. He just sank to the bottom then came a little more with it and was floating at the top for air he got by the filter and stuck to it I pushed him off that for 2 hrs he was void of color and gasped at the top. The other fish seemed fine. I am praying all will be ok he is now swimming mid tank and all his color is back and is acting normal I hope he survives the night I will feel realll bad because it was nothing other than stress that I caused that made him that way.
I set up the filter that the seller had and mine so there is a 75 gal biowheel and a 150 gallon biowheel rollen in there with 4 airstones pumping in oxygen. I have makeshift lids on there until tomorrow to avoid jumpers.
My big pleco is just not moving alot which concerns me but I think he will fair well that would be my bigest sorrow if I lost that one.(he is the one that eats out of my hand) The little pleco is fine the African Cat is fine the bottom feeder cat is fine Carnie the gold fish seems lost and the Guromi acting like nothing happened.
I lost my shark fish last night (b4 the change) he was 3 days new he wasnt right since i got him. I hope morning will be good :(

I know moving fish/tanks around is stressful. I did a major renovation a year ago that was very hard on myself and the fish but we made it though. I'm sorry you lost your new fish. I hope the fish settle in.
You should buy a Python clean and fill system so you don't have to siphon with your mouth. That water must have been nasty; you actually swallowed it?
What kind of African catfish do you have? I assume it's a predatory catfish? How big is he? I would worry about him eating your smaller fish.

he is about 3 inches i am not sure what he is called (my recpt is inthe car) spots straight finup and down 3 white whiskers yea very pretty, he is a predator but grows slow. Only small fish is a tetra and a see through thing that is real small. Once he gets bigger I am going to put the little guys in a different tank. because i still want another shark fish/catfish and they to will eat them. SO I am hoping by the time I get to that point I can get a small i mean smaller tank 50 gals to keepmy little guys.
All the fish are doing well and 100% back to normal thank god. All are very happy and eating well
what temp should i keep this tank I have
2 plecos
1 bottom feeder little dude
1 tetra
1 see through thing small
1gurami
1 african cat fish
1 gold fish (big he is going to the pond it the spring he was a fair prize this fall)
The other tank stayed at 72 with out a heater but this one is to big for that so i have 2 60 gal heaters in there now and it is reading 74

I did the same thing a few days ago during a water change out in my aquarium! :o
Immediately I spit it out, making things a little wet around me.
My wife was a few feet away and looked at me like I was crazy.
Pretty embarassing!!!
Funny ... I don't remember it tasting bad.
Maybe there's something wrong with me ... <_<
PS sorry to hear that your shark fish didn't make it. :(

the taste wasnt anything I guess now that I am thinking about it. i spewed water everywhere gaging and yes too spit where ever I could. I gaged because it went down my throat at 100 miles per hour and the actual thought of what i did made my skin crawl all night lol funny my husband never did ask 'are you ok?' he just stared at me too.
maybe fish water is in our blood so it leaves no taste. WE NEED help

it is a cuckoo catfish gets about 6 in

74 to 76 degrees F should be fine for your fish. The goldfish likes it cooler but he'll be moving soon anyway. The others are pretty tropical.
Cuckoo catfish sounds fitting around this forum.
