I'm almost sure I'm getting a tub pond when the weather starts getting warmer. I have read Robyn's pages on tub ponds and have decided that I would love one. I have a 20 gallon Rubbermaid container and have made some sketches and thought about what I'd like. I have decided on a buried pond, maybe with some plants but I've never kept aquatic plants before so I don't know how that would turn out... Anyways, I'm thinking about what fish to put in. My 2 main choises right now are rosy reds (or fatheads) or guppies. I have 2 male guppies at the moment, in separate tanks, and I think they could benefit from a larger tank. I don't know whether to put both fish in, get a separate tank and put one species in each, only pick one species and get an extra tank for breeding, or get another species of fish and put it in the pond instead?
What do you guys think would be best?
I would like to breed at least one species, the guppies because I have bred them before and have 2 juvis that might grow faster in the outdoor pond, and the minnows because they look really fun to keep and I'd like to try breeding a new kind of fish.
Where do you live? If you're in Zone 9 or 10, the guppies should do fine outside most of the year. In colder zones, they'll only do well in the summer and have to come inside for a large part of the year. Fatheads or rosy reds can stay in the tub pond as long as it doesn't freeze solid so they'd have to come in during the winter too if you have real winters but for a shorter amount of time than guppies. The two species can certainly get along but, if you want them to spawn and have survivors, there will be more babies that make it if you only have one species in the tub. A 20 gallon tub pond isn't very big, so, to get the most fry, only put in a few pairs of adults (either guppies or rosy reds).
Here are my pages on guppies and rosy reds (both of which need updating!):

Thanks for the link and info!
I do live in Canada so it's quite cold in the winter, but I was planning to use a heater in the fall or in cold nights and bring the pond in for the winter...
I suppose I'll see if any fish stores around here have rosy reds or fatheads first, if they don't I'll have to go with the guppies.
So will I need another tub pond if I decide to spawn the rosy reds?
Since you're in Canada, you'll probably have to bring in any fish for the winter since it would be hard to keep a 20 gallon from freezing.
If you want to spawn the rosy reds, you can do so in a pond or an aquarium. They are interesting to watch which is hard to do in a pond. They are more apt to breed in a pond of say 50 or 100 gallons than a 20 gallon tub but, if it's just a few fish, they might. If you put in a lot of them, they'll be squabbling too much to successfully breed.
