christina2lehner - March 29, 2008 12:30 PM (GMT)
My new albina channel car may have the begining signs of ich 2 smll (pen tip) size white blob on tail fin. what do I need to do 1/2 of my fish are scaless does not look like anyone else has it what should I do i would like to catch this early so it does not get out of hand.
powder is the newest to the tank does this spread or can it stay isolated to one fish? He is still eating and swimming pretty normal he did not come right out this morning for food which that is what made me take a closer look.
I raised the temp in the tank to try to get it up to about 80/82 extra O2 being pumped in from what I hear the icks life span is harder in high temp. 150 gal not sure if I want to traeat the WHOLE tank at this point please advise

Oh, that's not good. Is it possible to get him out of the tank and away from the other fish? I would think that would be the first step, then again maybe if it is in the tank it is already too late for isolation and you need a full tank treatment. I don't have any first hand experience with it so can't really say.
Best of luck and I sure hope Powder makes a full recovery!!! :(

C2,
Can you get a picture of the white blob?

I will try i called AA cuz for some reason i think it is a fungus not ick looks like to very small tuffs of white on his tail. So when I called AA they told me the best way to treat would be remove fish apply iodine directly on tail (not to get on gills or eyes and it should go away in a couple days so we will see. It is not the salty crystals I beleive are usally ick/ich whatever.
Got powder out of tank he stabbed me twice fell on the floor then got dipped in iodine and back in the tank i will try to get a pic but him being white and the spots being white and he doesnt pose for pics well I will see what i can get.
let me know what you think.

I'm so sorry your new guy has problems. Can you send photos?
A few isolated spots may not be ick. [I see you later posted that you think it's fungus but I will discuss the ick anyway since I already wrote it to maybe help others.] Ick is usually little white spots all over. If your fish were not sensitive and scaleless, I would suggest a tablespoon of aquarium salt per 5 gallons, raising the temperature to 80 degrees F, and putting in an ick medication (I use Aquari-Sol). Since your fish are sensitive, try just the salt and raised temperature. Even the scaleless fish should tolerate a tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons. If they show signs of stress, it's easy to change some water out to dilute it. The amount of salt used to treat ick is usually two or three times that for fish that tolerate it.
If it's ick, it certainly will spread; ick's very contagious.
Ick is not harmed by the warmer temperatures. The warmth makes the ick's life cycle move faster. Ick medications only harm ick when it's in the free swimming stage. Once it's encapsulated on the fish (the white spots on the fish), it's protected. By warming up the water, the baby icks will burst forth from that white spot faster. Once they're in the water, then the ick medications and salt work. By making the life cycle faster, the ick is thus "cured" faster. The less time the fish has ick, the better.
What's the "small see through thing?"
Ok, now I read your later post that you think it's fungus. The fungal medications are also nasty chemicals that can harm scaleless fish. Salt and PimaFix by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals are safer, more natural treatments for fungus so try those.
Where did you find topical iodine? They seem to have banned it here. I used to buy it for cuts and stuff. I hope Powder is okay after his fall. If a fish gets dirty, especially on an injury, infection (bacterial or fungal) may worsen. It sounds like adding medication to the water may have been a better choice than your getting jabbed and Powder dropped. Let us know if the iodine seems to have helped or not.

iodine I got at wally world per the request of the AA guy that orange stuff huge bottle 4$. I can send you some if you like?
powder is doing so far AA said that the spots will take a few days to go away after the treatment I treated his tail fin and bottom anal fin. where i see the very tiny spots they were not there yesterday so they are pretty new (not there for the eye to see) He is swimming and eating still and i am not seeing anymore yet.
I tried to get a pics but with no luck and I do not want to pull him back out.
Is fungus contagious?
why can there not be fish vets I hate trying to figure this out I really do. I check on him every 20 minutes and I will all night long
he did not eat earlier but he slammed some food down at the dinner feeding even going after the Goldy for getting to close so he has some spunk back.
No other fish has any signs of anything at all.

Fungus can be contagious but it's usually a case of ever-present fungus taking advantage of a wound on a fish.
There are fish vets. There are none in my state though. The fish vet would charge you probably $60 just to look at the fish if you brought him in, not exactly a bargin unless your fish is an expensive koi.
Hopefully the problem was an isolated incidence.

I'm sorry for the problems. It sounds like the new channel catfish brought something into the tank. Or, it could be related to the stress of the new tank and moving and so on.
The MarOxy will treat for fungus. Maracide is for parasites. Ick is a parasite. Plus, you have seen some fish flash (scratch) so there could be parasites in addition to bacterial problems. The scaleless fish won't take well to either of those medications so be careful. The Mardel product for bacteria is Maracyn I and II. Fungus is normally fuzzy although it can be white splotches. White or gray discoloration is normally bacterial. Also, fin and tail rot is usually bacterial but may have fungus in it too.
It sounds like Goldy is in trouble. I would watch the fish at various times of the day to be sure the other fish and new catfish aren't picking on Goldy's fins. If they aren't, then it sounds like fin rot. Salt and antibiotics will help with that.
If the medications are winning, it may be days before you notice healing starting to take place.
It's amazing how a tank of fish can be doing really well, and then you either introduce a new fish or move stuff around, and the fish can get so sick so fast. I hope they recover soon!

Goldy has not flashed yet today that I have saw and I watch a LOT the frey is faint and has not changed I watched the gorami go after her today which from what I say goldy is a boy and the gorami is a girl Cuz then I watched goldie several times try to get the gorami pushed against the side of the tank and when she pood the goldfish went after it like it was eggs then realized real quick it was not eggs.
The albino the spot that showed up yesterday on his top fin has gone away but still on his tail is still showing so we will see. None of the fish seem to be having adverse affects from the medication so I am watching that close and ready to move if need to be..
Thanks for all your input

WOW!!! You are having a terrible time :-( Hope things are getting better with the fish. Keep us posted. Last year when I had the indoor pond, the last fish I put in from the outdoor pond I didn't equalize the temp. first and they all ended up with ICK!! It was a nightmare to see the large koi covered with the stuff. Luckily after many sleepless nights and stressful days, they 100% recovered. A HUGE lesson learned for me! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, but I am sure with all your great care they will be fine!

That's when a fish rubs itself against something.
Sort of like scratching an itch ... with no arms or fingers to do it with.

Awwww thanks C2 and Froggy!
frogman3 - April 1, 2008 06:42 PM (GMT)
I guess I have been lucky with my pond fish but in five years they never to my knowledge have been infected with parasites and from what I understand they try to rub them off. (Flashing)
