I thought I would post a pic of one of my snails. Woo wee! :o This guy/girl or his/her parent hitched a ride on a pond plant that I purchased last year. I plucked it out of the pond yesterday [for the pic] while it was working.

Your snail is probably a species of the genus Physa. There are many species in this genus. Did you know that snails are either right handed (dextral) or left-handed (sinistral)? Hold the snail with the spire (pointy end) up and the aperture (opening of the shell) toward you. If the opening is on the right, it is a right-handed snail, if the opening is on the left, it is a left handed snail. This is one of the characteristics used to identify the snail.

I think that the snail might be right handed. I will have to pluck the snail out and have another look. That's so cool. I had no idea that they could be right or left handed. I just learned something new. Thanks :)

I have a few similar snails living in a jar where I have some hornwort and two grass-like plants (can't remember the name) that have grown together into one. They eat a little bit of the plants but not enough to harm them.
A few of them also live in my 10 gallon tank with 3 fathead minnows, many mts, 3 ramshorns, and a ghost shrimp. I'm thinking about getting some white clouds after I move.

When I first noticed the snails they were little tiny dots. The one in the pic is the biggest one that I have seen so far. The snails that used to be in the creek where I lived when I was a kid were all black, the shell was smoother and smaller than this one.
