Title: Forum Moderators
Description: What to do

Robyn - April 8, 2008 04:00 PM (GMT)
For those of you that are now forum moderators, here are your main duties. Moderation options are at the bottom left of the page that opens when you click on a post. You must open a post to perform moderation options on it which include delete, move, pin (pins at the top of the list), bump (move to to the top of the list), and so on.

1. Try to get on the forum at least once a day. If you're going on vacation or otherwise can't get on, let me know to find someone temporarily to take care of your duties. Sections can also have multiple moderators.

2. Delete all SPAM in your section (porn, drugs, and other obvious things). If you are unsure, leave it for me to see when I come in. Do not delete a message just because someone asks you to do so without consulting me unless it's obviously derogatory or something.

3. Replace all words considered to be offensive with the first letter of the word followed by *'s. Do that by editing a post.

Here are some optional things for you to do:

1. Make sure that every post with a question gets an answer (I try to do that) even if it's to just acknowledge that you know they're there and don't necessarily have an answer. People want to know someone is paying attention.

2. Move topics that are in the wrong section to the right section (move topic under moderation options).

3. Create a pined introductory note to your section (doesn't apply for notices). You could tell them about yourself, rules of the forum, links to web sites like mine that are relevant to the section and so on. Basically, it's a welcome section for the page. Let them know if you want them to report posts to the moderator. When people see an offensive post, they can click on "report post to the moderator." Those used to go to me (I requested people not send them because I'm on here just as often as e-mail). Now, lucky you, you get those e-mails. If you e-mail more than get on the forum, that will let you know if there's a bad post.

4. Delete duplicate postings made by accident.

You can also lock down posts so no one can reply to them. I suggest that for a section's introductory pinned message. I will lock this post down. If you wish to reply to it or related topics, please start another thread elsewhere.

As the need arises, I can edit this message.

Good luck to the moderators! Let me know if you have problems, wish to become a moderator, or can no longer be a moderator. Thanks.
