Description: Hows the new pond coming

wayne r - April 10, 2008 11:00 AM (GMT)
Have you started with the new set up and are you going to install the lower pond fed by a stream?

Are you still thinking about getting orfes? I sure wish I was able to get you some of mine. But I know that is not practical.

I hope you got pics of the building process.

I have the smaller upper pond 8 x 9 x 2 ft contstructed which is a combination of framing with buried landscape timbers and 2 x 6's and digging and packing the dirt on the out side of the framing to create a level burm. The location had a drop of almost 2 ft from one side to the other, which is the reason for the framing. This pond via a 7 ft stream will feed the lower pond and the berm will not be so extreme so I will not have to play carpenter again. My neighbors really did not pay much attention to what I was doing but I did stop them one day to reasure I was not building a hog troff. This week I received all the rest of the pond componets and was checking it all out to see how it all fits together. 8000 gal pump, skimmer, filters, and plumbing parts so much fun. :)

Orfe's are you kidding, I bore anyone who will listen to me about the fish from the UK. I did want to ask you do you think your orfe's would have spawned if they didn't have axcess to the stream? They sure seemed determined since the photo you sent me one was totaly on his side. I'm going to do whatever I can so they can swim from the big pond to spawn in the stream. Thanks for asking and of course photo's will be posted.

Hi Froggy! Your new pond is sounding wonderful! I can't wait to see some pictures! I am glad you are having a good time. It's a labour, but a labour of love! Your design sounds really nice.

Fm3. I am convinced that the stream is the key to the spawn.
1- all suppliers told me they would not spawn. But how many large pond have a stream running out of it that the orfes can access.

2 The eggs are carried down stream to a pond were there are no fish to eat the eggs and fry.

frogman3 - April 11, 2008 03:03 AM (GMT)
Wayne , That leads to another question. Could you see the eggs once they spawned in the stream? Were they attached to the rocks?

Yes I could, but you really have to look hard at details.
I would describe them as , round balls about the size of a pin head and opec in colour. Not in clusters but scattered every were on pea gravel rocks and plants.

Finished up with some minor details this afternoon so after the soccer game tomorrow I will be dropping the liner in the first pond. Should be a little over 1000 gallons in the pond by evening. Can't wait.

Sounding good Froggy! You are trucking right along! How is your weather there these days?

frogman3 - April 21, 2008 01:36 AM (GMT)
It was quite cool today 60 but better than yesterday two rain delays so..... spent 10 hours at the soccer fields yesterday. Didn't get the liner in today soccer and more digging, setting up the spillway from the pond and digging out the spot for the filter falls.
forgot about that part. :(

Think of the money your saving ,not going to the Y for a workout.
I am sure you will have a masterpiece when your done.

frogman3 - April 21, 2008 01:45 AM (GMT)
If I survive  I keep repeating to myself as I dig "if it doesn't kill you, it will make you stronger"! Ok couldn't find a thread to hijack so I just want to complain since last night I had two pair of goldfish that were spawning today when I returned at noon one of the males was missing. What's up with that? Never lost a fish in 5 years. Could it have been a frog? No signs of any other predators. :(

I hope your goldfish is just hiding; they are good at that. Bullfrogs sometimes eat smaller goldfish but not too often. There are plenty of predators like herons and raccoons that are more adept at fishing.

Frogpond is almost complete. You can see some of the flags in the background which are markers for the area for the fish pond. I have seven lily's in there most of which will be moved to the bigger pond.

Excellent job Froggy! I like the rectangle shape, it reminds me of my pond. Of course as soon as I made a rectangle pond, I decided I wanted a round one :P Keep up the good work and thanks for posting the photos! Does your doggy try and go into the water?? Those are going to be some spoiled frogs at your house!

Thanks KK that is Princess "Leia" hard to believe she is 11 years old I wish I had her energy. Have to keep her on a leash or over the fence she goes after other dogs. Water no way..... You say the word bath and she's under the bed for hours! I have to board her for the first time while I'm gone and wondering if I should leave her my cell so I can make sure she is ok. She understands english just can't seem to speak it.
