What is a bush tailed possum anyway?
Tia
Oh, they are so cute. I have seen those on Animal Planet.
Thanks for the link Robyn!
That is one very wet possum in that link. Ours are grey.
When we moved here 5 years ago there was one here that was used to being fed so we just kept doing it. I get a little extra fruit for them and they get the left over fresh veggies etc - it's a very efficient way to recycle without the compost heap.
I have bee able to see small babies peeping out of pouches close up and the current Sharon senior (ie the dominant female in the territory) doesn't mind being patted occasionally. Her mother still comes around sometimes. She was a dreadful mother. Kept losing babies. We had to take one poor little mite who wasn't even furred yet to wildlife rescue after we found him clinging to a verandah support.
The current Sharon senior was found trying to climb a metal door frame but she was older so we just put her up onto a wooden cross beam and she was able to go back to the "nest". Now she is a wonderful mother. She takes excellent care of he babies.
The down side is that we have a metal roof and there is nothing a possum likes better than to get up into a tree, pull on its football boots and leap heavily onto a metal roof for a game of football with its friends - well that's what it sounds like anyway.
They make the most unbelievable noises when they are angry or upset. I had no idea what was making the noise first time I heard it. I couldn't believe any living thing could make a noise like that.
