Title: Rabbit Bath

Laura - April 13, 2008 03:20 PM (GMT)
Hi!

This morning my rabbit was out running around and he tipped over a container of vegetable oil. The lid was not on tight, so it went all over the floor. He then went and sat in it and now he is all covered in oil. I was wondering if it is possible to bath him in warm water with Dawn soap, since they use Dawn on animals that have been in oil spills. Is there any other way to get the oil out of his fur??

Thanks,
Laura

Animals love to make a mess! I've given my rabbits many baths for various reasons but never had to remove oil. I use Bunny Bath shampoo or oatmeal shampoo. I'm not sure how well they'd work on oil. You can try the dawn but I would start with just a small spot to see if it even works. Be sure not to get it into his eyes. If the oil is really bad, I would cut off some of the fur. Any oil left in the coat may eventually harden up and/or become smelly. I hope you can get most of it out.

The worst grooming situation I've had to deal with was maggots. Once it was just the rear of a rabbit with full size maggots I had to pick out. The other time it was a geriatric longhaired cat my mother let outside to "play." She had dimentia, wandered off, collapsed, and was covered in a million fly eggs by the time I found her the next morning. I cut off all her fur it was so bad. They just started to hatch by the time I finished. She lived another year.

Oh wow Robyn, that sounds horrible! Just thinking about that makes me feel a little bit sick.

I would try using rabbit shampoo first, since rabbits are very sensitive, dawn might bother their skin. If that doesnt romove the oil I would then go onto use the dawn.

Hi,
I think Dawn would be better then Rabbit Shampoo because of it's would take the oil off of the rabbit's fur better. Just use Dawn and some warm water. That should do the trick. Just be sure not to get it around the rabbit's eyes. I am a rabbit breeder of several differnet kinds of breeds. I have fish also. I had a friend of mine that gave me a baby rabbit last year that the owner did not have a place to put it anymore. When I got this rabbit, it's little back paws had missing hair and was infected. :( Tear, Tear! So I gave it a bath in Dawn , but not get it in the rabbit's eyes. And I had doctor it with Q tips and Neosporin. Now this rabbit is my baby name Tiny. I am keeping her as a pet.

vic31, Hi and welcome to the forum! :)
What breed(s) of rabbits do you raise? I like rabbits but don't own any.

Storytime :)
When I was a kid (about 3 years old) my mom got the bright idea to raise rabbits for....well...food. I of course had a crying hissy fit which got me the usual-NO WHERE! Anyway we ended up with quite a few of those guys. Seems they breed and have many babies, lots of babies :o . I don't know what breed they were but they were all white and not real big. I loved those little guys and would help feed them. One day when I came home from a weekend at my Aunts house they were all gone. :o They said all the rabbits got out. :o
Huummmm I wonder if that was true.

They also said that the deer that they "tried" to slip by me was beef but I was on to them. ;)

Those darn parents.

Hi!
Sorry I took so long to update you all. I gave my bun bun a bath using dawn and all of the oil came out. He HATED being wet, but once he dried he was much happier. He no longer sat in one spot licking himself all day, instead he returned to his normal bunny self :D

Laura I am glad you bunny is now clean! :) I am curious though, how did your bunny knock over the vegetable oil in the first place? :)

I just remembered I had a rabbit. His name was Alexendar..he was a dutch, had him while I was in college. My roommate in the dorm had a shepard puppy. When we'd walk them together people thought it was a cat and dog till they got close. lol I used to wash him in Palmolive. One pet my mom said 'no' to, so I found him a home with a rabbit breeder. He was her prize male ( biggest dutch she'd ever seen ).....college dorms, supermunchies, duh..wonder why. :ph43r: :D

Hi tlc~
I had a small container (just a plastic cup container with a lid) on my floor in my room because I used it to stop the squeaking of my hamsters wheel, and while he was out of his cage he knocked the container over and the lid must not have been on tight. It spilled on a hard surface, so it didn't seep into carpet or anything, and then he sat in it and you know the rest!!

SadieMay,
Hi, I am a rabbit breeder of dutches, dwarfs, and lop ears. Dutches can be very big. My mom would not let me get a rabbit for a pet either. :ph43r: I will post the pictures of the rabbits when I find them.

I noticed now that the fur under my rabbits chin is all dead and falling out. I can pull it out by the handful. He doesn't like me to touch under his chin, so I haven't been able to get a good look at it, but I know there is one small bald spot about the size of a 1 inch circle. What could this be caused by? Could it be because of the bath that I gave him? He is inside, so I don't think that it is mites or anything like that. Has anyone ever had this happen? What could I do to help him? The fur that is dead and falling out is under his dulap, which is just fat I think because he is a bit obese even though he doesn't eat very much. He is still eating and drinking fine, so I don't know what to think. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Laura

I'm not sure. If the oil created a seal on the skin and deprived it of gas exchange for a while, that might have caused the hair to come out. But, I'm totally guessing. I don't know if the Dawn would cause the problem. Did you only use it on the dewlap? I assume it's not normal shedding? My buns will clump shed sometimes.
