Title: Am I A Horrible Person?
Description: 8 feeder goldfish
kENNY - April 17, 2008 05:27 PM (GMT)
Hello! I was thinking about something and wanted to ask you guys about it. Am I a horrible person? I bought 8 feeder goldies for my pond ~65G [and Plan to move them when I get a bigger pond built (A year or two)] which has nothing else in it other than snails. I also bought a Sarssa comet and a koi (on impuse). I keep the water very clean by doing a 50% WC a week and remove anything dead. I do plan on moving them to a MUCH bigger pond and was just thinking about this pond being a minnow pond. ANYWAYS. Am I bad for rescuing those poor, cute feeders from a cruel fate? [I know I am about the koi ;)]

Hi Kenny! NO you aren't bad for rescuing the feeders. I won't give you a bad time about the Koi as I know you know that was not a good choice! Sarassa's also can grow quite quickly. I definately wouldn't add anymore. You should be okay as long as you keep things clean. I honestly find that my goldfish pollute worse than the Koi for some reason?? Goldfish are POOP MONSTERS!!!! Enjoy your new fishies! P.S. What colour is your Koi???

Kenny, you're not the first person to have bought too many fish on impulse. We've all been there. But, now that you have them, you just have to do the best you can for them. Building that larger pond is the main thing. With good filtration and water changes, hopefully the fish will stay small and hold out for the larger pond. The worst I've seen for overcrowding fish was when my own grandfather bought something like 20 feeder goldfish and plopped them in a 10 gallon tank (no equipment of course). I don't think they made it past two days. He was the king of killing animals!

They are about 1\2-1 inch max (The feeders) the sarassa is about 2 in and the koi is about 6 in. Oh boy do I keep theri pond clean! It has a Biological\mechanical filter+ has carbon sometimes. As I said I do LARGE water changes, filter gets clean every 3 days, etc. Koikrazy: Yes goldies are poop monsters! They have little red poops (I feed them good foods [Tetra color extreme]) everytime I see them! They have all come a long way as far as health goes. I wrote this some where else and they said I was and that it was "inhamane" but I think it would be a lot more inhumane to have had these little guys feed to oscars and what not! Thank you all for the kind words. (The kois color is tri colored, Orange, white, Black :P )

kENNY, I don't see anything wrong with saving the little feeders from impending doom. :) Maybe you have to many but all the more motivation for you to build the nice big pond!
Good luck and I hope they don't grow to fast to soon. :)
Route3drummer - April 18, 2008 02:14 AM (GMT)
Yeah, at that size you should be ok for awhile. The koi may prove to be the biggest issue, but even that should be ok for awhile. Of course you aren't a bad person for it! Like Robyn said, we have all been there! I myself have always hated the whole idea of "feeder fish" too. I know everything has to eat, but still....
Anyway, it is obvious that you care about the fish, and that is the first and formost important thing. I'm sure with a little planning your future pond is going to be a beauty! :D

Hi Kenny! Your little pond sounds great! Your fish are lucky to have you. I have a koi the same colour and her name is Zephyr. I hope you get to fullfill your dream of having a bit bigger pond in the future. I think now that I would rather have a couple smaller ponds than the really big ones. You can get so much more up and personal with your fish when they are in a smaller environment. Maybe you can teach your koi to hand feed!! Have Fun. Post a picture sometime if you can :D Elaine

He already does eat out of my hand! as do many of my goldies. I only want one big pond like o say 1000-1600 Gallons. So I will have 4 ponds. One wildlife one (20G liner**YET TO BE BUILT**), this one, the big pond, and my 2-4 gallon plant "pond". I will try to post a pic later....But Im still waiting for my pond showcase pic to show up to robyn and my site be created! (it's this pond.) Though, none of the fish are really visable...I think my koi [Sauron] was hiding in the clay pot.

Kenny, did you send me an entry for Pond Showcase? In the last two months, I've gotten three entries but none of them had the attached photo. I tested it; it works which means the photos sent were too big (it has a size limit). I e-mailed all three people (don't know if you were one) to directly e-mail me photos, and I never got any. I won't put up an entry without a photo. So, if you want a page on Pond Showcase, please e-mail the photos to me. Thanks.

kENNEY, do you have the file (picture) uploaded into your computer? If you do, and you want to, you could email the picture to me and I can change it for you. It isn't hard to do if you have photo editing software. I think that Adobe is suppose to have a download soon for a free mini version of Photoshop.
If you are using camera software to help download the pics from your camera into your computer you may try to un-install the software then reinstall. If you decide to un-install make sure you run some scans for spyware and adware before you reinstall. JM2C.
Let me know if you want to send the pic to me. :)

I have to disconnect my jumpdrive and connect it to that port because "Security" (My ultamate program in managing my computer) says that port has been destroyed so it disabled it and I only have one port on the front now. Just send me your email in a PM and ill send it to you soon.
