Description: Poorly Betta

BlackRat - February 22, 2004 12:44 PM (GMT)
I got a betta at the beginning of the week, he's been fine until today. I thought I could see something attached to 1 of his gill covers, but it just appears to be a lifted up scale. I also notice a red mark on both sides of his face. I think it's due to him trying to scratch, like all of my other fish are doing. I've treated the tank with an eSHa med which can be used as a precaution when getting new fish as it treats 18 different bacterial, fungal, fluke etc problems. This didn't seem to work so I thought it was maybe Ich but I saw no white spots, I did treat the tank for this too but all my fish are flicking and rubbing still. I think this is what my beta has done. Now he is just sitting on the gravel floor and comes up occaisionally, he's not moving much at all :( I can also notice something on 1 of his fins, not fungal or a white spot, it's just faintly white, I don't know what it is. He may have lost a bit of colour but it's hard to tell, he is also swimming with his fancy fins hanging down, theyre not spread out like they used to be. And last night, one of my female guppies got covered in white stuff, started hanging at the top, swimming awkwardly, and then died. I think it may have got sick due to stress of .giving birth

Please help!

I hope this isn't a contagious disease as I have a breeder box in there with 20 baby guppies in :(

I can notice, around the base of his fins, its going a dull blue colour and starting to spread onto his body. He's done a bit of swimming, but is still sitting at the bottom of the tank mostly. Other than what I've described I can't see any big visible signs of illness. What could be wrong with him? As I said, my other fish are still flicking and rubbing against objects, I've treated the tank with meds and theyre still doing it! I also changed some of the water last night.

You can see where the bases of its fins have gone a dull colour and it has just start to spread onto its body.

Have you checked your water chemistry, pH, ammonia, nitrite, etc.? Have you done water changes? It might be a bacterial infection called columnaris which causes white patches (that aren't fuzzy unlike fungal infections). I suggest a 50% water change with gravel vacuuming, the addition of dechlorinator (maybe Stress Coat), the addition of aquarium salt (a tablespoon per 3 gallons for treatment), and perhaps an antibiotic (MelaFix by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals is an all natural one or Maracyn by Mardel (erythromycin) is another I've used). Patches like your betta have are often related to water quality but you mentioned white patches on your other fish which may be the columnaris. Good luck!

:D I bought a great product for my betta fish it is called BettaFix remedy, by Splendid Betta. Also make sure the water is warm enough, mine likes it about 80.

If the betta was in a tamk with other fish he probably has an injury from fighting
