Title: Poor Dead Lilies

Route3drummer - April 21, 2008 11:04 AM (GMT)
So when I did my pond work on the weekend I was sad to find that non of my hardy lilies made it through the winter. :(

I didn't get them into the pond until late last summer and I guess they just didn't have enough time to establish themselves before cold weather hit. Now I have to try and find some more, but the things are so darn expensive at a nursery. I got those ones from ebay, so maybe I'll try that again.

Dag nab it.

Thats too bad.

Do you think they froze?

Make sure that they are not just slow getting started.

Route3drummer - April 21, 2008 11:51 AM (GMT)
Don't "think" they froze. I know the water didn't freeze because the fish stayed around the pots at the bottom all winter, and my water iris are doing really well and they were sunk down beside them.

Yeah, I left them in the pond, just on the off chance they my make a comeback, but there should be SOME sign of life on them, and there isn't anything. <_<

Derrick if you want to check them out before purchasing more they will be mushy if they are dead. If not repot, fertilize, and they should be fine. Doesn't your local Wally world have them for sale?

Not the last time I looked on the weekend, but they were just in the process of setting up their outdoor gardening center, so just maybe they will. Thanks, haddn't thought of that!

Good tip on the mushiness. I'll check before tossing.

I went to Menards yesterday morning and in the section with seeds and gladiolus bulbs, they had hardy water lilies for $8.98.

I haven't been able to move mine up from the bottom of the pond yet. How long can I leave them there?

Sorry about your lilies. I thought some of mine were dead but all four were alive. It's too bad you can't come here. I repotted my lilies and have a bunch of white tubers that are just rotting in a bucket that I'll probably end up tossing.

Route3drummer - April 21, 2008 08:24 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the offer Robyn. For some reason governments frown on plants crossing borders though

I went out todat after work and gave them a real close inspection. It looks like one might be still alive. One very tiny shoot just barely visible. I left the others in as well, just in case.

There is someone on the American Ponders site (in the Canadian section) that said she is dividing her lilies this week and she will send me some for postage. So I should be ok. A couple of healthy ones will more than be enough for my little puddle!

So even though it looks like I lost a couple of lilies over the winter, it looks like I will still have lots considering the size of my pond. What do you think? I have or will have:

1 Surviving lily
1 Lily coming in the mail
4 water Iris
1 Bean Bog
1 Elodia
1 Water Soldier
Floating Arum
Floating Watercress
6 Cat tails (bull rush)

My pond is only about 8 x 5 feet, so it should be well planted.

frogman3 - April 23, 2008 02:54 PM (GMT)
Seems like a lot to me, but I used to have cat tails but each year they would bust through the pots and take over half the pond. So each year I had to drag them out hack them up being carefull of the frogs that liked to hide in the roots just trying to control them. Some time could you post some pics of the Bean Bog, elodia and water soldier. Are they invasive?

Okay now here is a plant I have in my yard already! QUESTION: I have cattails living in my clay pond and in the creek flowing into it. How do I get them into my pond? How do I move them and dig them and replant them and do they go in a pot with dirt or just rocks or how does it work??? Huh Huh HUh...oops too much coffee this morning ;)

Route3drummer - April 23, 2008 03:49 PM (GMT)
hahaha....calm down lady!!
I just have mine in pots, that way try to keep them contained. I don't want to have too many, just a few on the edge. I don't see why you couldn't dig a few up and replant them in your pond.

Check out this site KK, there are lots of plants you can grow WAY up there!

Cattails are hard to kill. Just hack off a clump of leaves with attached roots with a shovel, shove it into a pot with clay soil, and top with pea gravel. If I can keep them alive, you can too! They need yearly repotting in anything under 3 gallons.

KoiKrazy - April 24, 2008 02:26 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the advice Robyn, I think I can handle that!

frogman3 - April 26, 2008 02:12 PM (GMT)
Made a trip to Wally world this am since it was raining and just a little whipped from hauling about a ton of rock yesterday. Garden entrance is open for the first time this year and I walk past a young man with his WM badge on this shirt figured he was on his break. Only stopped here since I was next door at the rock store to buy some spillway flagstone but of course had to check out the pond stuff. Lo and behold I found a three pack of pond plants for $7.00 Two hardy water lily's and one Black Gamecock Iris. Couldn't pass that up. So as I am leaving here is the same young man at the entrance. I ask him is this your job? He said Oh I'm the greeter and security guard but your ok cause I saw you check out. <_< Here I am spending my hard earned money at WM keeping them in business till I retire so I can be a WMG an now they have taken to hiring young wipper snapper's. What's this world coming too.

That's too funny!!! We wanted my Dad to be a Walmart greeter but then he started practising around the house and we figured he would either get fired or arrested on his first day ;) Great deal on the pond plants!!!
