Title: Possum Pics For Kk
ColdGold - April 21, 2008 02:53 PM (GMT)
I just took some pics of Sharon and Baby Sharon.
The baby in these pics is a the age where she spends quite a lot of time away from her mother. I was luck to have them both come to the verandah this evening. This baby is mother Sharon's 2nd baby. She is a wonderful mother (unlike her own mother who was quite good at losing babies) and happily shares the fruit etc with her daughters.
This year's Baby Sharon

Mother Sharon is on the right and the baby is on the left in these pics.

We occasionally get ring tail possums too but they tend to just ignore us. The brush tails are not very happy when the ring tails show up and they all get very vocal about it. Possums make the strangest noises.

They look like a happy bunch and they are cute too! Not at all like the opossums that we have around here:

My grandmother "rescued" some babies when I was a little kid. I would let them hang from my arm with their tails. I thought it was cool but now, not so much. ;)
Thanks for sharing the pics CG! :)

They are cute. Ours are just scarey looking. lol You can tell when you're in their personal zone..they hiss like a really pissed off cat. And then you run. lol

 Aww, they're adorable! I wish the ones near me were more like that, mine or closer to the one that tlc posted. I once had a baby one that stayed in my backyard, but he was really hurt, half of his head was just blood. :( it was really sad.

They are cute. I never knew of people making them pets before. I heard of people eating them but not as pets. :D

People don't eat possums here. Our native fauna is all protected. You can't kill them and you are not allowed to relocate them more than 500 meters from where you find them if for example you have to remove one from your roof space.
Our possums are not pets exactly, they just live here. We put food out for them, as did the people who owned the house before us. They come and eat it and some of them don't mind being stroked. The older one in the pics is the current dominant female at our place. Her mother was the boss when we first moved here.
They are pretty smart and learn quickly. Apparently they are about as easy to train as dogs. They certainly have learned what "come and eat" means ;)

Hi Maggie,
I don't think that many folks here eat possum, at least not in my neck of the woods!! And you'd be hard pressed to find a restaurant with it on the menu (I hope!)
I keep returning to this page to get a look at your Sharons ... I can't get enough of those furry faces. :) They look so friendly.

Actually, there are still a good amount of people left in the US who eat the Virginia opossums (the only marsupial native to the US). Possum stew is still popular in some rural areas.

Yuck!
There's a big part of this country, east of I-5, that I still don't know that much about.

My folks, folks used to eat possum pie. In the depression you did what you had to and ate what you had too (or wanted to ;)) It is the norm some places back east and down south. We went to New Orleans the first of this year and found alligator on the menu at a few places we stopped to eat at. That was strange to me but not at all for the people that we talked to. I didn't try it but they said it tastes like chicken.
Funny how everything tastes like chicken.

I have a hard time eating normal everyday meat. I wouldn't eat a "strange" meat for a million dollars. If I see someone of t.v. (survivor, lol) eat something weird I start gagging and can't stop, LOL Yesterday I saw a guy on t.v. eat an egg yolk and that was enough to start me gagging away, I don't eat eggs either!

Actually, 'gator tail is much sweeter and chewier than chicken. It's really quite good, especially with a honey-mustard sauce.

I'm going to date myself now. Remember when it was the fad for collage students to eat live goldfish! Worst one was this young woman contestant eating a live 4 inch spider. Gave me the willies.... :ph43r:

I dated myself once but found I was a very poor conversationalist... :o
