Title: The Word Thingy
tlc - April 21, 2008 10:26 PM (GMT)
I see the word "thingy" in different posts here and there on the forum.
Robyn has used it, KK has used it and TenPenyNail used it today.
What is the technical definition for this word?

Thingy: 1). denotes an object that, although used on a regular basis, and may be a common place item, the name of which escapes the user at the precise moment of use; 2) used to describe an item which, in other circumstances, the name of which may be construde as offensive to some; 3) an undisclosed part of the male anatomy.
Hope that helps! :D

I prefer thingamabob which denotes something that has no real purpose but you keep it anyway. As for "thingy," I'm using it as a synonym for "thing" but in a playful manner and sometimes to mean I don't know what it's really called.

When I really don't know the name, then it's a 'whatsawhoozit'. :D Had one of those last night trying to explain to my boss the part of the machine that broke. She didn't know the name of the part either, but understood 'whatsawhoozit'. lol :P

When I was a young boy I would help my uncle wiring houses. He would be on the ladder asking for the Watchamacallit and get quite fustrated when I didn't know what he was asking for. I soon learned to watch what he was doing and have the tool in my hand before he asked for it.
