Title: In A Barrel

Route3drummer - April 24, 2008 12:36 PM (GMT)
So I saw some pots at the store last night that were made to look like a half whiskey barrel, although a bit smaller than that. No idea how many gallons they would hold, but just think of a slightly shrunken barrel (maybe 2/3 the size).

Anyway, I think I will get a couple, and put some extra liner I have in one and put a water lily in it. I don't want to run a pump or filter or anything in it though. Would one or two feeder fish (inch or so long) survive in it with no aeration or filtering? I would just put them in for the summer/fall, and if they were still alive would put them in the pond for the winter. Would this work?

Derrick I have four Lily's in temporary tubs till I get my ponds up and running. No fish of course but they are growing twice as fast as the others in my existing pond. Only problem if you consider it one is algae is growing just as fast so every couple days I change most of the water. Robyn has several of these set up I believe without filtration like you are talking about, with fish(not goldies). she could tell you more.

Been reading up on it this morning, and it actually sounds quite common. I don't want anything too big or elaborate. I think Robyn keeps minnows in hers, but I have never seen minnows for sale up here, so "feeders" it is. At 88 cents each it's not going to break me if they don't make it.

WOW! Feeders for 88 cents! The shipping charges for them must really be high. Feeders are 12 cents here.

Feeders are one of the few things Wal Mart is good for. ;)

My tub ponds are fish-less. The frogs use them to lay eggs though so they often have tadpoles. A few are totally sans animals. I have to add Bt to those to keep the mosquitoes under control. I have rosy red minnows (bought as "feeders") in my 153 gallon pond which does have a PondMaster filter. My 50 gallon tub pond has a small pump with sponge inlet, my front porch 20 gallon pond has a little fountain (no life in it, purely decorative), my 20 gallon tub pond out back has no electrical in it, and my back 16 gallon pond is a cesspool. I haven't put out my 2 gallon pot pond of taro yet or the 16 gallon Tricker pond which I don't think I'll put out this year.

Anyway, you can keep a few small goldfish in a tub pond for one season. After that, they will be too big and need to go into a "real" pond. Goldfish and rosy red feeders here used to be $1 a dozen but I think it's almost twice that now.

How would a betta fair being in a tub pond for the summer? I am assuming they would be fine, and then I would bring them into a 5 or 10 gallon tank for the winter (I know, no putting males together!). I might do that instead of a couple comets in each tub. Will have to decide right away! LOL

wouldn't the water be way too cold for a betta?? Especially at night? I don't think they do temp fluctuations very well! Better stick with the feeders.

Route3drummer - April 25, 2008 04:50 PM (GMT)
True, true. Feeders are a better bet anyway. This may just prove to be a raccoon feeding hole!

hmmmm....I just saw online that Canadian Tire has small pond kits (4 x 6 x 1 1/2) for about 80 bucks. I am mentally revising my plan and am now thinking of getting one of these and putting it in above my existing pond connected by a short trickle stream.....it's no wonder my wife says I have attention deficit... :D

Well, how 'bout some details (about the pond) ... since you can't display pics.

uggg...it looks like it was designed and built by some drunk! Doesn't anyone take pride in their work anymore? LOL....

hahaha...well, I got it "finished" Sunday. It ended up coming out ok, but it had a few major design flaws that needed to be fixed on the fly. I ended up turning it into a much smaller pond with a little stream/waterfalls emptying into my main pond. I figure I can cover up some of the "issues" with it with some proper planting! hahaha

That's it. With some people you have to take away their car keys when you see them drinking, with me it is take away my shovel!!! hahaha

The DW took a few pics of Saturdays work (I think just so she could laugh at me), so I'll try and post them and get a couple of it finished after Sunday.

:D
