I am experiencing an algae bloom. I have everything up and running including uv clarifier. What should I do about stringy algae on sides of the pond? I read that filamental algae should be removed immediately, and that some stringy algae is beneficial to the pond. Also the brownish-green algae stuck flat against the sides, do I leave it? Should I add some pond salt this spring? Lots of questions I know, but I'am stumped on this algae thing, didn't have any last spring. Thanks would appreciate any help CHERYL
I leave the algae on the sides, if you watch you'll see the fish munching on it. With the string algae I scoop it out and throw it into my flower beds for a little extra fertilizer. They've come out with special designed brushes/rakes for spinning the algae to a clump..I just use my hand and grab and toss. Read the directions really good with the salt. I have 600 gals. and maybe toss in a tablespoon every few months. They do have a test for salt, comes in handy.
thanks for the info. My pond is only 170 gal. I have been pulling some of the stringy stuff out. I just wasn't sure whether I should try to get it all. I sort of short and have to lay on my stomach to reach and then still can't get to bottom of the pond.
I would leave the shorter algae; it's helping to filter the water. You can manually remove some of the longer algae. If you have plants, as they grow, they will hopefully outcompete the algae.
