Title: Expansion

Route3drummer - April 28, 2008 11:09 AM (GMT)
So as mentioned in another thread, I undertook a pond expansion over the weekend. As usual I didn't plan it, so I was just kind of "winging it" as I went. I did hit a few snags along the way, but I think by the time I was finishing it up Sunday I had worked around most of them.

I would advise anyone building or expanding a pond to PLAN IT CAREFULLY!!! :D

Here are a few of Saturdays pics, taken by the DW as future evidence I am sure. Will try and get some of the finished product on soon.

And finally, I wish she had given me some warning so I could have at least sucked the guy in and posed for all the purdy ladies!! :P

It's called 'she suckered DH into doing it'. hehehe :P
I can't do that, DH has arthritis so I'm the pack mule in yardwork. With at least 30 cement blocks, and ( a future buy ) 144 landscaping stones I hope to at least lose a couple of pounds. I lost 5 lb.s and gained 2 bumps on my head trying to move the queen size bed frame I made in the basement up to the first floor...solid pine.

What were those snags and your workarounds? I like to learn by others' mistakes.

Oh, and Derrick...weren't you the one who had the beer powered start to his pond? Is that a Pepsi I see in your hand?

Maybe that was the snag...no beer ;)

Route3drummer - April 28, 2008 02:26 PM (GMT)
Linda, I wish it WAS a pepsi, I probably would have avoided some issues! :D

The biggest goof up was the fact I made the stream/falls too deep, particularly at the top where it starts. I could only fill the upper part half full before it started running down the falls!!! hahaha....duh!!

I figured a way around it the next day, but what a pain.

Yeah, that was me that had the beer induced pond in the first place. I really have to quit drinking before I have no yard left!!! hahaha

Derrick

p.s.....The ponds are my labour of love. The DW considers them holes in the ground with water in them! hahaha

Looking good Derrick! Oh and I see it's a "light" beer too? Trying to look good in the speedo this summer are we???

Route3drummer - April 28, 2008 04:05 PM (GMT)
hahaha....yeah, if it's "light" beer, it's not really like drinking beer...right?

At least that is the argument I use....it never seems to work though.

What the hell you mean "trying to look good in the speedo" lady? I'll have you know it's a damn fine specimen as it is. The neighbours don't mind. Whenever I wear it they all go running back into their houses, I assume to get their cameras so they can capture such a fine physical specimen for posterity. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA B)

R3D3, it this a new, new pond? I thought I saw in one of the pics that you posted someplace on the forum, a pond that was started that looked like this one? I think it was located on the side of your house?

I am alot like you in someways, I have to just start digging before I know what it's going to look like. I can sort of see it in my head but I plan as I go you might say. I just don't "get" drawn out plans. I can't really put it together in my head. If it's on paper it's over my head but if I do it I get it. I guess I just didn't take any planning classes in school. I probably would have saved a lot of time and effort if I had. ;) I'm weird.

Or is it to get the phone? :o

Route3drummer - April 28, 2008 04:41 PM (GMT)
Yeah, it could be the phone...probably want to call me and let me know how fine I am looking! That's it, I'm sure of it! ;)

This ended up not actually being a seperate pond, more of a small pond and stream/falls. The main pond was built last year....under similar circumstances! hahaha

Wasn't that a pic of a guy in a big hole and something to do with a beer? ;)

Yep, I bet they were calling you too.

Derrick sober or not all I hear from those that have built ponds with streams is " in five years I have redesigned the stream 5 times" So in essence have another since it makes no difference. ;)

I thought for sure one of you were going to make fun of his hat. "Domi" could be a drunken misspelling of "dummy." If you're going to get drunk and do things on a whim, I think making a pond is the best choice!

Well Robyn atleast you know what to do if you build another pond! :P

What's that Kenny? Get drunk? I don't drink alcohol, and I've never been drunk in my entire life. I like to be in control too much!

Route3drummer - April 29, 2008 10:34 PM (GMT)
hahaha....DOMI...Tye Domi, one of the best fighters in the NHL in his day!

Ugg...these non-hockey people....  LOL

So because of poor planning (at least that is what I am calling it!) I have more liner than I like showing around the edges. So I have constructed some hanging "baskets" that I made from burlap and lined with just a plastic bag that I can anchor to either the rocks or drive a stake and have just the bottom of it hanging in the mater, or none at all. I am becoming an expert and hiding my screw-ups! hahahaha

KoiKrazy - May 7, 2008 11:26 PM (GMT)
Well when you live in an area that grows wild beer......it is just natural to drink while ponding  :o :P
