Title: Pet Ducks And Geese ?

I am surprised this being a pond related forum that there is no mention
of ducks as pets. I have a two acre pond and its sole purpose is
to provide food for my fifteen ducks and geese. They are the
top of the food chain recipient and I dont want any large fish
or turtles that compete with them for food or would want to
eat the baby ducklings. Even people with small ponds could
have two pet ducks and there is nothing more entertaining.
I mention two as ducks are social and they need a partner
not necessarily of the opposite sex to hang out with.
Of course with a sexual mate you can also get offspring.
Two females only and you can have a nice breakfast once
or twice a week with 5 or 6 delicious eggs much better than
chicken eggs.

Do you mean you are surprised that Ducks and Geese do not have a separate section in the Animals section here on the forum?
I like ducks. I don't have them now. We have coyotes that roam the property and would like to have them for dinner. We had them as kids. My grandmother would set up a washtub for them to swim in. It was funny when the babies would try to get in the tub. They just couldn't jump high enough to get in. I took a piece of lumber and made a little ramp that they could walk up so they could go for a swim. Geese are a different story for me. I like them at a distance. I had them chase after me when I was a kid. :o I can tell you that they can run fast!

I did find these threads about ducks in the Everyone Else section:

This thread in the Pond section:

Then there is this thread that doesn't start out talking about ducks but eventually gets there:

This forum is based on the topics on my web site which are based on the animals and stuff I've actually had in my life. I know there are many other animals people have (and I'd love to have if I had infinite time, space, and money). Those animals can go into the miscellaneous section. I've had chickens and turkeys but never any ducks or geese. I would love to have them but don't have the ability to set up a separate pond for them. Sure, they can survive without a pond but I think they were meant to swim elegantly across a pond (and hopefully not eat the plants and fish you want at the same time for those of you that do try to keep ducks and geese with your regular pond).

I do have a small page on ducks and geese with some photos at
http://www.fishpondinfo.com/birds/waterfowl.htm

If you or anyone else with experience would like to contribute articles (information or just stories) or photos related to them (or any other animals for that matter), I would love to put them on my web site with credit to you.

Usually most domestic waterfowl are purely herbivorous or mainly herbivorous, especially geese, which rarely eat any meaty foods. So I wouldn't expect them to eat any fish.

As for plants, yes they will devour them. But it's still a good way of keep blanketweed, azolla, oxygenators and duckweed under control.

The main problem is that the birds will poo in the pond which may end up in disease or the ducks may kick or attack the fish.
