Title: Suspected Wild Rabbit Nests

tlc - April 29, 2008 09:08 PM (GMT)
I have recently discovered what I believe to be 2 wild rabbit nests in my yard. One is by the pond in between a fern and the pine tree. The other is under a small lavender bush located near the pond area. The nest under the lavender I had suspected was a breather hole for a mole or a vole run way. A couple of days ago I discovered the hole was covered with dead grass and a little bit of what looks like rabbit fir. Last year when we put in this pond I was working in the area and saw this little tiny bunny. When I moved I startled it and it ran towards the pond and fell in. I hurried over thinking I would have to "fish" it out but the water level was high enough and it had enough adrenaline going that it was able to get out all on it's own. I wonder if it could be one of the rabbits that built one of the nests. Do rabbits go back to the area that they were born if they can to have their kits?

I will try to get some pics of the nest to post.

Ok, The two pics below is of the nest under the lavender bush.

These two are of the one behind the puny looking fern.

Three summers ago I saw a little bunny in our backyard. We have a privacy fence around our yard and I felt to sorry for the bunny because he had to grow up all alone and no one to snuggle with and he would prpbably never find his way out again. But at least he was safe. So I went to the feed store and bought rabbit pellets and put them in a bowl in the way back and a bowl of water (which it never ate or drank). The next summer, I was looking out the kitchen window and oh my gosh.....the rabbit was a she and she wasn't loney....there were 2 baby bunnies!!!! Last summer I was doing some raking and I raked over a nest that I didn't see...it was hidden really good and out came 2 little bunnies and I saw where they ran under a small space that they had dug under the fence. I was feeling so bad, so I fixed the little nest the best I could. They did come back...I saw them again in the nest and they get way down in the nest so they can hardly be seen. The nest looked just like your pictures. I am hoping there will be more babies this summer. I will let you know. Hope you see your bunnies!

I always check if there are rabbits in the nest, somtimes the rabbits build what looks like a perfect nest then theres nothing in it, and real nest is somewhere else X.X

Unlike birds, if you touch the nest and move the fur to check she will come back to the nest at night to feed the babies

I don't know if a rabbit will return where it was born to make a nest but she would certainly be familiar with the area. I can't tell from the photos if that's a rabbit nest for sure but it certainly sounds plausible.

Cottontail rabbit does come to the nest at night to nurse the kits. I think Painteds has it backwards. It's birds that can't smell well. Rabbits have a good sense of smell so don't touch the babies or the nest.

My folks always taught me to leave wildlife babies alone and not to bother them. I paid attention to them and try to do what I was told. :)
I did move some of the bark dust to see what the mound was. I was concerned it might be a rat. :o After I saw the fir I figured it might be a rabbit and have left it alone. I hope I didn't scare the mom off. :(

Some birds do leave from touching most dont though, also keep bothering the mother makes them leave too

Touching baby bunnies will NOT make the mother abandon them. This is a common misconception people mistakenly have.

Be very careful Tia, you can never trust a rabbit! Didn't you learn anything from Monty Python's "Search For The Holy Grail"?

:D

thanks, I needed that today :D ...I haven't thought of Monty Python in YEARS. I was the quiet rebel. I used to listen to George Carlin albums and watch the Python show on vacation in Kentucky. ( while the whole time my Grandmother wanted to whack me across the head with the Bible. ) Never knew she could screamed until she saw the naked lady going across the screen in the openning Credits. lol

Here we go... ;)
I must confess that I never saw Monte Python.
Looks like I missed out on something else, again. :)
That George Carlin is one rough dude!

Update on the bunny report...
No baby bunnies yet! :)

EllenR, did you see any baby bunnies last year?
How long did it take for you to see them?

Painteds4life - May 1, 2008 11:10 PM (GMT)
Yes those links just said there is a chance like all animals if you disturb them. Real quick fixing the nest if you disturbed it is okay like they said in about 20 wildife rescue websites, some state natural resources websites which im sure you saw as you looked around.

tlc,
I saw 2 bunnies last summer but have not seen any so far this year. It seems like it was around June....they were real little and stayed close to the nest. After they got a little bigger they started going farther away from the nest. I would see them either early in the morning or late evening, before dark. I have a pair of binoculars and I watch them through my kitchen window. Good luck!!!!!! Let us know if you see bunnies.

I can see one of the nests from my bedroom window. I can't see where the mom has been there. Maybe she is down there? The only evidence that might show she has been there is that the bark dust may have been disturbed. I can't tell forsure though. I guess I just wait and see. :)

About two weeks ago the DH told me that he almost mowed a baby rabbit. I told him about the nest and said that was the area that the baby was in when he mowed. He said it ran out from now where and startled him. Later that evening I peeked in the nest and sure enough the baby was in there. I check again last Sunday and the baby was gone. I didn't even get any pics. I never did see any babies at the other nest by the pond. I am sure if there were then they are gone too.

Well I know how adorable baby bunnys are I used to raise rabbits but you may be sorry in the long run when they start eating your favorite flower plants and veggies if you have them. If you start having problems with them you can get a live trap and take them out to the country where they can live happy ever after. :D

tlc - June 6, 2008 04:47 AM (GMT)
Hi Whisper, welcome to the board!

Your right but so far they haven't been snacking on my plants. I haven't even seen them but I haven't been outside at dusk. We have plenty of coyotes around that keep the population down.
So if you live in the country (like I do) and trap a wild bunny where do you take it? Can I take it to the city? ;)
I should add that I am just kidding :)

tlc that's funny. :D I used to live in a 60 acre pine grove. We had fox, deer, coyote, turkey, lynxe(spelling) wild dog packs and I'm sure things we never saw. Oh yeah and rabbits. And a man made 55 year old gold fish pond. There must have been thousands of fish and bull frogs in it. Not a big pond but loaded.

tlc - June 6, 2008 01:43 PM (GMT)
So where did you used to live that had wild turkeys?

Whisper - June 6, 2008 08:20 PM (GMT)
Up state NY about 30 miles outside of Buffalo. A little town called Centerville. It way out in the sticks. Our place was beautiful though. A little white cottage house set in pine grove. Walk down a short path through the grove to an opening area there was a 55 year old man made small fish pond. Stocked with gold fish for all those years there must have been thousnds of them in there. Water was very murky because the bottom was full of leaves, branches and stuff like that. We used to feed the fish and believe me it was a feeding frenzy. All those fish trying to get some. We were planning on haveing it cleaned out but were told that if we did the cranes and racoons and other critters would clean out all the fish because they would be able to see them in it. There were also 7 different cabin sites back in the woods. A lady that owned it years ago had 17 children and told them to go and build cabins in the woods and they could use them as there own. Around the main house I recovered no less then 15 flower gardens that had grown over through the years but still flowered so I could see where they were to clean them out. Well I'm way off the subject here so before I get kicked off the forum I'd better shut up.

Whisper, that sounds like heaven.

Whisper - June 7, 2008 05:43 AM (GMT)
It was. We used to call it our little paradise. I have a video I took of the whole place. Can't watch it though. It breaks my heart to see it again. The man I was with at the time unfortunelty is an abusive alcohalic. We split up. I couldn't afford the place by myself so I had to give it up. My heart is still there. :( We were renting with the option to buy. We had a pet crow that we raised from a baby. When we finally let him loose outside he wouldn't go away. He would sleep in the pine tree right outside the house at night. When I would sit down on the ground to garden he would come over and carry my hand gardening shovels away. They love anything shinny.

tlc - June 7, 2008 04:48 PM (GMT)
That is so sad. Too bad it didn't work out better. Maybe someday you will create your own little paradise that no one can take away :)

Whisper - June 7, 2008 05:16 PM (GMT)
Yes. For years after I racked my brain trying to figure out how I could somehow come up with the money to buy the place. It's been 8 years now and still haven't figured it out. I would be a little scared to stay there alone though with the wild dog packs that ran in the woods( or bear). He bought me a Gremen Shephard for protection and If I was outside working alone he alway told me that if anything came up close to the house that I should let them have the dog and I should get in the house as fast as I could. :( If I where ever in a place like that again I would have a pack of Shephards. No less then 5.
